Go to the top right hand corner of your Admin page and click “screen options” and enable the “Discussion” module there. http://en.support.wordpress.com/screen-options/

This page > Settings > Discussion
Discussion settings is where you set up defaults for comments.
We can also overide the default settings and enable or disable future comments on any post or page.

Enabling comments on posts and pages when they have been previously disabled is not retraoactive. So if you have posts or pages that were were already published, after you enable comments on future posts and pages, you must manually enable commenting on the posts and pages whereon commenting was previously disabled via bulk editing.

Reference link > http://en.support.wordpress.com/enable-disable-comments/

Go to your Edit Posts Screen (Dashboard > Posts)

    http://en.support.wordpress.com/posts/edit-posts-screen/
Or go to your Edit Pages Screen (Dashboard > Pages)

    http://en.support.wordpress.com/pages/edit-pages-screen/
Select all the posts or pages you want comments enabled on using the checkboxes on the left.
Go to the Bulk Actions list, select Edit, and click the Apply button.
You will see the options that are available for bulk editing.
Select the Comments menu, then “Allow”.
Click “Update”.

When we close comments a phrase like "comments closed" or a similar phrase will appear and it can only be removed by CSS editing after purchasing a custom design upgrade.

I am using the basic blog, the one where you don't download any software. I don't seem to be able to disable the comments field in this format. Is there a way to do it? I've looked for all the suggested means, they either don't work, or don't exist. For example there is no on screen option for the discussions box.

The blog linked to your username has been deleted. Please post an active link starting with http:// to the blog in question so we can examine it.

Note: The front pages of our WordPress blogs are designed to load quickly and showcase our post content so comments are collapsed on that page. By clicking the comments link or the post title on the front page the posts will open on their own page where all comments display below them.

In a new blog one does not have many posts or comments. In an established blog with many comments if the comments did not collapse on the front page there would be serious performance drawbacks. The page would take a long time to load and page loading time is a page ranking factor. Studies demonstrate that we have only 3- 4 seconds before visitors refuse to wait and click out.

Thank you - although I still can't get it to work! I've tried the 'screen options' thing AND the 'discussion settings'. All the boxes are ticked and everything in the set-up suggests that there SHOULD be a comment box, but when you look at the page, there's not.
Also, I've tried using the 'screen options' to take away the visible tags at the bottom of the post, but no matter how many times I uncheck 'tags', it still shows them. Sigh.

Hello there,

I'm VERY new to this and have spent the last few hours putting together my first blog. There doesn't seem to be a comment box for people to add comments at the bottom of the blog itself. There is a comment box on the 'about me' page, but obviously I don't really need one here... Can't for the life of me work out how to add a comment box to the blog itself... Any help appreciated. It'll probably be the first of many questions...

1. Following the guide at http://en.support.wordpress.com/enable-disable-comments/ you'll need to individually enable/disable for all published pages and posts. If you don't see the Discussion box when editing a page or post, check "Discussion" in the Screen Options tab near the top-right.

2. When you remove all widgets, the theme takes over with its own default widgets. To override those, add a blank text widget to your sidebar.
