If it "came up as a normal post and wasn't listed under the twenty twelve ephemera section" then you didn't set it as an Aside. If you select the aside format for a post, you'll see a link to it in the Ephemera widget, and the complete post will show up on the main posts page just like any other post, without a title and with the indication "Aside" instead.

Thanks for getting back to me

When I posted an aside I chose the aside format for a comment I was making. I had assumed that because I had placed the widget under the footer area one, that details of it would appear there. Instead it just came up as a normal post and wasn't listed under the twenty twelve ephemera section. I've since taken it off as it wasn't what I wanted. I think I'm confused with how they will look visually on my page. Apart from length how should their appearance different from a normal blog post?

Just to be clear an "Aside" is no an except from the text in an existing post. An aside is a post in the form of a post format that lacks a title and categories.

Aside – These are brief snippets of text that aren’t quite whole blog posts. Useful for quick thoughts and anecdotes

I have only two pages, posts page and info about me page. My posts page is the default home page that comes with the theme. On the posts page I would like to add twenty eleven ephemera so i can post asides etc rather than having to have full posts - also makes it look more interesting. I've pulled it into the side bar but it's not showing. Every other widget has been fine. I've even tried posting an aside but it just comes up as a main blog post which I don't want. What am I doing wrong?

I would like to make a suggestion to the Twenty Eleven developers for the wordpress.com theme.
There is a great widget called Twenty Eleven Ephemera where you can show the different post types like Quotes, Asides etc.
Firstly I would like to be able to choose which Post Type is used in that Widget (and if it had categories to choose from also, that would make it even more flexible). .
Secondly I would like to be able to show all Posts, or Posts with a particular category, but NOT including Ephemera Post Types (ie only standard posts).

At the moment there is no way to show only Standard Posts or Recent Standard Posts in a widget, because all the Ephemera Post Types are included in the Widget.

Thanks

On a roll with Twenty Eleven, but curious about whether I understand one aspect of it properly. It looks to me like with the Ephemera widget you can only generate a list of asides AND status updates AND quotes AND links.

So...unless you ONLY use links as an exotic post type, and don't use the other types, you can't recreate the functionality of the old 'blogroll' widget, which no longer appears. Is that correct?

Again, is this something a CSS upgrade (and a bit of tweaking, and a bit of luck) could sort for me?

many thanks,

Oh, one more. Can you have widgets on the sidebar for static pages or just the post feed page?

I can't seem to find how to do that. I know I can make a showcase page and any Aside or Link pages will be featured with the Ephemera Widget. But when I do that, I'm getting my most recent post actually posting on my Home Page (static Page) rather than just the link under the Featured Articles (Ephemera Widget) heading. I don't want posts to go on my home page at all. I just thought I might be able to add some widgets to the page if it was the showcase page without having the posts feed to that page as well.

Is that making sense?
