Thank you, Takashi. That was very helpful. Visiting each of those sites helped me see some of the possibilities offered by Chapters -- better than the demo did. They also gave me ideas of what I do and don't want.

Now to get brave, jump in and try to figure out *how* to do it. A brain injury took away my "geek-ness" abilities. So it seems confusing and scary. I'm not sure which I'm sposed to do first ... buy the theme or open/start the blog first. (I already bought the domain name.)

Again, thank you much.

I'm seriously considering using the Chapters theme to start my new blog. Most of the themes I've seen on the WordPress Browse Themes site offer links to blogs that use each theme. But on the Chapters showcase page it says that 147 blogs use it, but doesn't give any links. So other than the example used in the demo, there are no others I can look at. I really want to see how others are using this theme before I spend my $$.

I have all sorts of questions about Chapters, specific to what I want to do with it -- post each chapter of my book, w/out dates. I don't want it to be a calendar sensitive site. My project is huge and complicated and I need something that will help me bring together the myriads of parts into a structured whole. Chapters *looks* like it might do that. When I'm done -- or perhaps when I have a certain portion -- I'll go public with it. But before I ask those more specific questions, I need to see how others are using it.

Thank you in advance to anyone who might be able to help me w/ this.
Nanette

You can view the 170 themes in the Themes Showcase and there you will find some of those who use it in the right hand sidebar. Every theme also has a libe demo site as well.

You can also use Google search to locate other users of any WordPress.com theme. Here's an example. I use Reddle on my blog. The footer credit links are: Blog at WordPress.com. | Theme: Reddle by Automattic. If I use that searach string in in Google Search the results will be others using the same theme.

You can also do WordPress.com forum searches by using the name of the theme. Example 1: http://en.forums.wordpress.com/tags/twenty-ten

The search results tell me that 2010-themed sites - at least those sites whose owners didn't know how to erase the footer - all share a rather bland/fixed look and feel. But maybe that's not such a terrible place to start with my first site.

I'm in the process of selecting a theme for my blog. Is there a way to search and access samples of WordPress.com blogs that use a particular theme? For example, if I want to see how other bloggers have customized a particular theme, is there a way to say, "Show me WordPress.com blogs using this theme." I kept looking for something like that on the Theme library page, because it seemed like a feature that would naturally be there. Suggestions? Thanks.

To be able to sort or manipulate data, the data would have to be in a database such as MySQL, and then you would have to use PHP scripting, or perhaps javascript to access and manipulate that data. None of that is possible at wordpress.COM.

You could of course do it with a self-hosted wordpress blog as long as you had a good knowledge of MySQL and an appropriate scripting language. It would also be recommended that you are very familiar with the security issues involved and knew how to avoid them since you could open a huge door for hackers very easily.

hi universalgeni
These are great. I appreciate the info and your time. I am now thinking some more (dangerous) and I am wonder now has anyone found ways to go beyond this?
Are there was to give the user to manipulate the data view - doing sorting filtering etc or am I stuck if I have to stay with wordpress.com (vs .org) (I figured maybe I could have multiple tables each with its own specific sort with links to them ... a kluge I dont want to implement given what is available in real widgets )

I also think now I can use the google spreadsheet to maintain my data as new data is found. From the spread I can then seamlessly get clean html table code ( better the the verbose junk from MS excel) I then can then us the tweets & the good examples refenced by universalgeni and put updated table on site
