re: advertising and ToS violations
In a nutshell no blogger initiated advertising, retailing or reselling the work created or services provided by anyone other than yourself is allowed on free hosted wordpress.COM blogs. E-commerce transactions via shopping carts and the like cannot be conducted on free blogs from and being free hosted by wordpress.COM

The advertising exceptions noted in support documentation are for high traffic blogs that qualify for and are accepted into the Ad Control program, and for extremely high traffic blogs that qualify and are accepted into the paid VIP hosting program.
http://vip.wordpress.com/
http://en.support.wordpress.com/advertising/
http://en.wordpress.com/types-of-blogs/

If you do require an ecommerce site, advertising and/or affiliate links you can hire a web host and get a free software install from http://wordpress.org Refer to > http://support.wordpress.com/com-vs-org/

@shimworld: go to your widgets area (look under "Appearance" on your Dashboard). When in widgets, find the Facebook Like Box in the list of available widgets. Drag it to your sidebar wherever you want it to appear. Open it up by clicking the little down arrow & put in your page URL & any other info it wants. Save it. Look at your blog & you should now have a FB likebox widget active in your sidebar. :)

You can also drag a Facebook like box widget into your sidebar (a newish feature).

Are you making money from the referral to the sportswear company? So many clicks, so much money, etc? If so, that is almost 100% certain to be a big no-no. If you're just recommending that your athletes & their fans buy stuff from someone, that might or might not be. I mean, if I have a cooking blog & I rave about King Arthur flour & provide a link to the KA site (unsponsored, unpaid), that's natural & just a service to my readers.

I would contact staff about the sportswear issue -- unless, of course, it is paid advertising, in which case, it's a no-go.

Well, that's easy. It's on your Settings->Sharing. You can put all kinds of services in, including Google+ and FB Like and Share. Or you can get a Facebook Badge like I have on my blog http://raincoastermedia.com

You will NOT be able to have any kind of paid advertising. It's against the rules here.

People choose to have their own websites externally hosted for a number of reasons, including the fact they want to host advertising. Or they want Flash embeds all the time. We have security restrictions here that prevent some code from running.

The Facebook Social Plugin allows people who view your blog to click the like button and be instantly liked up to your Facebook account page. We have a page for our blog and have recognized the importance of facebook for our blog.

What we are looking to do is have a sports blog for our school that has ways to keep people coming back to the blog (via twitter and facebook). We also are promoting for a sports wear company that carries our schools clothing. We want to have a banner on the top of the blog to direct people to the site.

Why do people choose to have their own website versus be hosted with wordpress?

I have no idea what the Facebook Social Plugin accomplishes, so I can't tell you if this is a smart move or not. Why don't you explain just what it is you want to get done and we can tell you if there's a workaround? There usually is.

I tried searching the forums but couldn't really find what I was looking for.

I am deciding between buying a domain and downloading wordpress or upgrading my wordpress account. I have read all of the pages about the differences, but I still can't get a clear understanding.

The two biggest things I want is the Facebook Social Plugin and a banner at the top of my blog to advertise for a company. Can I do this with an upgraded wordpress.com blog? Or would I have to get my own site and download wordpress?
