And it looked great. Then one day it just stopped working. No matter how many times I remove it and then add it again, it never shows up.
I also tried integrating a Facebook badge per your guide here (http://en.support.wordpress.com/facebook-integration/facebook-badge/), but that doesn't work either. No badge.
Please help.

Try this: go to Settings->Writing and make sure you have selected "Wordpress should correct invalidly nested XHTML" and save. Then take the widget out of the sidebar entirely. Then put it back in. See if that helps. If not, I think you will need staff assistance.

The Facebook like box widget we have here at WordPress.com will only accept Facebook page URLs. It will not accept profile URLs.

This is not always true. And sometimes if you click on 'member' (or sometimes 'inactive') below the user's name on the forum you'll get all the posts they've put here and if there's an associated blog it will be there.
