There is no FTP access to our free hosted WordPress.com blogs. Also note that there is no upgrade you can purchase that allows FTP access and the ability to install themes or plugins.

Only those with WordPress.org installs have FTP access and can install their own themes, third party themes and plugins. They are running a different version of the Oxygen theme than the one adapted to run on WordPress.Com software. Please read this comparison http://support.wordpress.com/com-vs-org/

There were a few suggestions to change the slider to a different one completely, but being the beginner that I am at WP, I decided there must be an easier route...

and there is!!

It is a simple fix that is a bit awkward, but if you like the Oxygen slider, it should work for you.

1. Go to plugins.
2. Click "install new" and search "redirect"
3. Install and activate the "Quick Page/Post Redirect Plugin"
4. Follow the instructions (in the posts that the slider links to, redirect to your permanent pages so that when you click on the featured slider it will go straight to your page, not your post).

You'll have to do a bit of playing around with the images and it will be a little clunky because technically you have a blank post, but it should work until Oxygen (if they do--- please do!) makes it possible to link to pages, not just posts in the featured content slider.

If you decide to make a new help request here in the forums instead of hiring a designer, please be a little more specific. Are you just trying to remove the background color from your menu items? I think that would make it look similar to the other menu and here's some example CSS to get you started when editing the menus:

.main-navigation li {
     background-color: inherit;
}

You can use that same selector to make other adjustments if you would like. We can help point you to resource you can use if you are interested in improving your CSS skills so you can make such adjustments on your own. Here is a great tutorial if you are new to CSS that I often recommend:

The "filter" property is the one that affect the gradient in Internet Explorer. I tested the example posted above with IE9 on Windows Vista, and it worked in my tests.

It seems like the "filter" property is causing the issue you're seeing. It's adding a gradient on top of the new background color you've set.

Try the following:

What color did you want? Give me the code and I'll put it in and then all you have to do is put the CSS in the CSS edit window and save. Nothing else has to be done.
