It is still there! You'll have to log into the dashboard:
https://latchment.wordpress.com/wp-admin/

Using the username and password associated with that account. So it is still available, and you should have no problem exporting the XML file:
http://en.support.wordpress.com/export/

Your domain name latchment.com is still mapped to latchment.wordpress.com, so you'll need to cancel your domain mapping (Store > My Upgrades) and then you can change your nameservers to update the domain itself.

At this stage I have reset the nameservers back to wordpress.com but it's still waiting to propagate.
Does the original latchment.wordpress.com site not get restored on the wordpress.com url when the domain is transferred? That was my understanding from the instructions for moving a domain and a blog to self hosted wp.

transferred domain name: latchment.com
set up hosting and wordpress installation
now can't get back to latchment.wordpress.com (the original blog url) even though the instructions said it should still be available. This means I don't have access to Dashboard>>Store>>Domains any more.

Since I can't access via FTP, is there any way I can get the blog back?

Dashboard >> Store >> Domains >> and try setting the primary domain back to your base WordPress.COM blog and see if that works

but I had it mapped to latchment.com

I have transferred latchment.com to hostgator and installed wordpress ready to transfer the blog over.

I understood that the original blog would still be there under latchment(dot)wordpress.com but it is still being redirected to latchment(dot)com and this means I am unable to download and import the files.

How can I get the original wordpress.com site and files back to export them to my new self hosted wordpress site? I'm confused.
