For content, you don't have to write actual posts or pages. Try lorem ipsum for text. And for images, just choose some from your collection (be sure to optimize for the web first).

The themes available on WordPress.com can be seen here:
http://wordpress.com/themes/
or dashboard—>appearance—>themes
There are filters so you can sort through some of the features of each on Preview.

I'd suggest you put up some content so you can experiment with how the different themes will look and act as you want to use your site. You could make your blog private so potential readers won't see the construction, or get another free blog to experiment on. Or you could choose to let the blog be public but closed to search engines. That way if you have a question we volunteers would be able to take a look at specifics.

I have an outline for the things I need for my blog. but I am having trouble sorting through the possibilities with themes. I need widgets,left sidebar, photos, flexibility (meaning sometimes photo priority other times word)

Hi there,

This is the first time posting in the forum after spending hours searching through wordpress theme templates and external sites too, to find a theme to adapt to our blog. We really hope someone can help us :)

We're looking for a theme VERY similar to chunk (we love the style, but it's lacking flexibility for content). The variations we want are:

A three column theme for:
1. Recent Posts
2. A menu area (of pictures that people can click on rather than a drop down menu)
3. Widgets - so our Facebook 'like' and twitter feed are much more accesible.

Does anybody know of any themes out there that are like this, or know where we could get something like this?

As Options stated, the key difference is control.

With the full version of WordPress, you can do ANYTHING you want to do, as long as you have the experience and ability to do it. And I mean anything.

With WordPress.com, features, styles, and any personalization or customization is seriously limited.

WordPress is for tweaking. WordPress.com is for blogging.

using a remote hosted version means being a host of it -- you can change it as you want and backup your own data.

using a WordPress.com hosted version implies being a guest on here and use only allowed, though sufficient for the most, features.

to get the difference one has start to use one or/and another.

I searched in the FAQ's (attentively) but couldn't find any information on the difference between the remote hosted version and the WordPress hosted version.

The documentation says that WordPress running on your own host is "more flexible" than WordPress.com hosted WordPress. But it doesn't give specifics.

I'd like to better understand the difference. Can anyone help?
