I tried an image, but wasn't given the option to "Skip Cropping, Publish as is" just a seemingly mandatory "Crop and Publish".

You can do this without CSS because Twenty Ten has recently been updated to use flexible headers. To make a flexible header work, start by creating an image that is the dimensions you would like it to appear on your blog. Then make sure you are using a theme that has support for flexible headers (like Twenty Ten) and go to Appearance → Header and upload your image. When you get to the cropping step, click the "Skip Cropping, Publish Image as Is" instead of the "Crop and Publish" button and your image will be added in without any adjustment at the size you created.

I have also updated our help page about flexible headers with a little more information so it's more clear:
http://en.support.wordpress.com/themes/custom-header-image/#flexible-headers

top o' the morning,

i'd like to figure out how to adjust the size of the header. currently on the 2010 theme, the image space is limited, very short and wide. i'm looking for a more vertical option, so normal images don't have to be cropped or distorted to fit.|

thanks a bundle.

I strongly suggest you use the tutorial. Those who dive in head first end up here begging for help to correct what they mucked up by not following the tutorial.

Appearance > Header is where you upload a header image

Here's the link to all support documentation which is also found on the bottom of your Admin page http://en.support.wordpress.com
http://en.support.wordpress.com/themes/custom-header-image/
http://en.support.wordpress.com/themes/custom-header-image/#flexible-headers

Here's the link found in the footer of the theme you are using to the theme description > http://theme.wordpress.com/themes/twentytwelve/
The suggested header image dimensions are 960 by 250 (width, height). However, both are flexible so you can upload a smaller cropped image if you wish. The width is limited to 2000.

What was going on is that the sidebar has a fixed width, so images that are wider are automatically downsized to fit. The image you had originally inserted wasn't a good choice. You could use it after you edit it in an image editing application to place the text below the photo instead of next to it.

The header image on Twenty Eleven is 1000 x 288 pixels and that's not small. Not everyone will be viewing your blog on a big monitor. For themes that support it, the Appearance -> Header page now uses what we call Flexible Headers. With flexible headers instead of being forced to use a specific size you can now use images that are taller or shorter than the suggested size for that particular theme. http://en.support.wordpress.com/themes/custom-header-image/#flexible-headers
