New to WP, hi everyone.

Quick question for you experts: I'm adding Sticky Notes to our main page, and finding that the little blurb before the "Read More" button is running too long. However, I don't know how to edit the text in the Sticky itself... seems to display the introduction to the post itself.

Help!

Thank you very much for your assistance.

On my company's wordpress site (not associated with my username), I'm very limited in the design choices for my content. I cant really change the font (except the to make something a heading), I can't change text color or size, and I can't easily control where images on the page appear. I used Word to create what I want one of my pages to look like, so I'm wondering how I can transfer this onto my wordpress. Pasting from word looses all the formatting on the text and I can't get the SmartArt I created to transfer at all.

If I save the word doc as a webpage, can I do something with it? I know I can embed a word doc but I don't want people to have to follow a second link to access the content.

Help appreciated! Thanks!

To do this, forget pressing return repeatedly, and forget the above Support doc that says nothing relevant. What you need is to cancel the wrap-around effect where appropriate; switch the editor to Text (=code), delete the extra paragraph breaks, and paste this after each accompanying text:

That's an unfortunately side-effect of editing. Browsers place images relative to text, but the editor may be a bit narrower than your theme with a different and possibly smaller font.

What you wind up making layout-wise in the editor may not translate accurately on the blog where it's probably a different width with different fonts.

Instead, try these tips for aligning your images: http://en.support.wordpress.com/images/image-alignment/

Hi people.

Im in need of some help. This is my page that ive created. I wanted to have one image and then place text to the right of it, and then underneath that another image and place text to the right of it - so kind of a list of pictures. This is how my page ended up looking in the end.

http://whatsjoeuptonext.wordpress.com/1st-person-films/

Now to get the images to look like this took alot of time and frustration. It seems that if i placed the images in this order in normal edit mode, once I clicked "update page" in normal mode it would then load and refresh only to display my images all over the place along with the text. The only way I got it to look neat like it is now is by editing in "distraction free mode", pressing the update button in there and leaving it at that. . however if i now want to ever go back into it to add another film review, it will not show my current layout, but instead the images will be all over the place along with the text.

Any ideas why it does this? Its almost like as soon as I press update its formatting the page in a certain way and its not saving it in the current layout. ?

Hope this makes sense lol

The web, sadly, is pretty archaic when it comes to formatting. It just isn't a word processor. WordPress.com isn't alone in this. I design and work on Joomla and Drupal sites and they have the same issues. Even the TinyMCE advanced editor plugin will not give you the control you seek. It just isn't currently available in web content editors.

You can control this, but it requires you to write HTML to do it, such as this example (which you can see on my test blog at http://flippintestblog.wordpress.com/2013/04/11/indented-poetry-test/:

<p style="margin-bottom:0;">This is the unindented first line</p>
<p style="margin-bottom:0;text-indent:20px;">This is the second indented line</p>
<p style="margin-bottom:0;">This is the unindented third line</p>
<p style="margin-bottom:0;text-indent:20px;">This is the forth indented line</p>

I am very unhappy with the current formatting options on wordpress and would appreciate either a plugin to override the mandatory double-spacing, or simply more formatting options in the "add a post" page. When I use shift+enter to override the double-spacing, the hanging indents in my post stop working. It is impossible to properly format poetry on wordpress - either a plugin that would allow single-spacing, or options for single/double spacing, hanginging indents, etc, on the post editor would be much appreciated. Thank you.

If you've got a post in which paragraph breaks aren't showing up (I'm not seeing such a post in the blog linked to your username), edit the post, highlight all, select Paragraph from the the Format tool, switch the editor to Text then back to Visual, click Update.

Blog editors and word processors are not the same and do not work the same way. The web standard is one blank line only, so you cannot add more blank lines by pressing return repeatedly like you would do with a typewriter or in a word processing application. If you want to learn yow to format and space your posts and pages see:
http://en.support.wordpress.com/writing-and-formatting-poetry/

If you are working in the Visual editor, to get single spacing between paragraphs hold the SHIFT key down and simultaneously click ENTER at the end of the paragraph.

If you are working in the HTML (Text) editor, a single click of ENTER will give you a single-spaced line, and two clicks of ENTER will result in double spaced lines. http://onecoolsitebloggingtips.com/2011/09/13/wordpress-formatting-and-spacing/

Hi! I use the "Sceptical" theme on my blog and love it, but since I plan to use a lot of quotes I need some help here, please. The theme supports this formatting, according to their demo blog it should be like this: click for image

On my blog it looks just like a simple text post without a title (in other words: an "aside" post), and I can't imagine what else I could do besides chosing the quote option from all the shiny formatting options on the right side of the menu.

So... is it me, or is it a bug in the theme? Any help is appreciated!

Thanks for reply justpi,

Getting there and ari has grown on me, i might need to get the custom design upgrade at some point, but just learning by doing it's already getting to look better (eg since primary side bar cant be moved I just moved the stuff at the bottom i couldnt see to somewhere else.

I did a fair amount of theme trawling before deciding on ari which is sufficiently similar to our website not to phase people but sufficiently different for them to recognise it as a blog, whilst not copying on mates' designs too closely...

Thanks again,
Sally

It also looks as if I will need to learn at least a bit of code to get stuff formatted exactly how I would like :-/. Can;t get a "gap" to appear between the image and the text however many times I hit return.

1) The web standard is one blank line between paragraphs, so hitting return repeatedly shouldn't work. Don't think of webpages in terms of typewriters!
2) Ari (and many other themes) have flexible width, to adapt to different screen resolutions and devices. Drag the browser window to make it narrower and see what happens. This is one of the reasons why you can't adjust the vertical positioning via returns anyway.
3) So yes, some things require some coding. To add space below an image, you switch the editor to Text (=code) and turn this:

<img ETC ETC

to this:

<img style="margin-bottom:24px;" ETC ETC

Change the number to adjust the amount of blank space.

it seems a lot needs reconstructing when you change theme

Not necessarily. Depends on whether you switch to a theme with a similar layout and structure or not.

OK, I seem to have solved the "secondary" side bar thing, it appears in all pages except the static front page, so I might just change the "front" page from being static to just a "post" page

No. The secondary sidebar on Ari appears on all static and dynamic pages, except if you select the full-width template on a static page (which is what you've done for the page you set as your front). You need to edit the page and turn its template to default.

With this theme I also don't seem to be able to put widgets anywhere else but in the 2 side bars?

Where else would you like to have widgets?

can I get the primary sidebar on the left moving - or not?

Not without the Custom Design upgrade.

Even to change fonts and colours?

Same reply…

I follow a couple of blogs with similar sets of functions and looks I would like to end up with

If you like these two blogs then how come you chose Ari? It's not similar: these two have a header with a top menu (like most themes), while on Ari it's the left sidebar that pays that role.

OK, I seem to have solved the "secondary" side bar thing, it appears in all pages except the static front page, so I might just change the "front" page from being static to just a "post" page, so that it will show up the "secondary" bar on the right like a sort of pseudo-home page.

For the primary sidebar which does not move, I suppose if there is no way to "release" it, then I will just have to stick to having the menu and first couple of tweets so that you can see these on a standard PC screen, and put the tag cloud and anything else on the secondary bar...

With this theme I also don't seem to be able to put widgets anywhere else but in the 2 side bars?

I follow a couple of blogs with similar sets of functions and looks I would like to end up with : they are

http://thebumpiestpath.com > fave - simple but clean looking - corresponds to the kind of "look" we like > white, sparkly

permaculturecottage.wordpress.com/ > less clean (darker, earthier), ut simple, still functional and fits with our subject matter

Seem that the flexibility I seek is not so easy unless I pay for it? Even to change fonts and colours? What is anybody else's experience and advice? Can a reasonable site really be done for free, or have you all customised to greater or lesser extent?

So still outstanding we have

1/ can I get the primary sidebar on the left moving - or not?

2/ can I have more flexibility with the Ari theme without changing theme or paying a Premium > advice welcome...

Cheers!

Please excuse the basic Q.

On the "demo" pic of this theme there is a left side bar, then middle part and the right side bar (if that's the right terminology). Which is why I chose it, alongside the minimalist look which is similar to our website. However I have 2 issues right now.

1/ I put 2 widgets (twitter and tag clouds) in the primary sidebar, which shows up on the left, but I cannot scroll down to get as far as tag clouds: this part is static, only the "page" part moves, so I cannot see the lower part of the left side bar.

2/ I put 3 widgets (categories, archives, stats) in the secondary sidebar but they don't seem to show up anywhere > I wanted them to be on the right hand side and kind of assumed that would be where they would end up without my doing anything, much as happened with the menu which Was quite intuitive.

It also looks as if I will need to learn at least a bit of code to get stuff formatted exactly how I would like :-/. Can;t get a "gap" to appear between the image and the text however many times I hit return.

I originally started out with the WP.com blog concept since I have a Yola web site but Yola does not have much blog functionality. Neither can Yola support a WordPress self-hosted blog, so I really need to get this to work!

No "posts" as yet so not much to go on I know, but would appreciate help before I go any further in case I need to start again and I lose stuff when I change theme etc.

- I already tried changing to some other themes and even with the teeny amount of stuff I already did with categories & menus, it seems a lot needs reconstructing when you change theme, much like any website...).

Please help me feel less grrr, before I drown my sorrows in Easter chocolate. Thank you.

Sally
