So I created the banner to be that size exactly and uploaded it and it doesn't seem to "fit" very well. I know setting the background to "transparent" on the header fixes the problem but I'd really like there to be a separate image from the background. Is there a way to make the image fit exactly to the space above the main set of links to pages?

Will making the banner bigger solve the problem? Thanks

Last thing: I found the menu area, had no idea it was customized - if I simply click "delete menu," does that solve the problem? And, if clicking that accidentally destroys the entire blog in some way, is there an "undo" option?

There isn't an undo option for deleting menus, but you can simply set the menu to blank under "Theme Locations" → "Primary Menu".

I'm pretty unsophisticated about this; removing the custom menu sounds like something I could figure out, but does that mean I'd have to change the words I use for categories, or is it something that wouldn't be noticed?

I've seen demos of this theme showing a photo and story across one wide column, with two smaller photos and stories side-by-side directly beneath it, each of those being half the width of the one above. That's exactly what I want. But, when I previewed the theme, I saw every story reproduced in the single wide-column format. Are there more column options with this theme, or is the single wide column all that's available on wordpress.com?

Where have you seen demos of this theme set-up as you describe above? I don't believe that this layout is available in Fresh News on WordPress.com, and it's likely that someone has customized the theme on a WordPress.org deployment. If you have a link to the demo, I should be able to tell you.

There are two navigation areas in the header of the Opti theme. The primary dark navigation bar (which shows categories on the demo blog), defaults to a category listing when a custom menu isn't declared.

Currently, you have a custom menu setup for your site, so if you bought the Opti theme, and removed that custom menu from the Primary Navigation area, your categories would be automatically displayed.

On the Opti demo, the categories are displayed horizontally below the header, and it looks beautiful. But when I do the live preview, my site (www.thepointfitchburgstate.wordpress.com) appears with the categories stacked vertically below the header, looking blocky and taking up a big part of the screen. I even cut them down to four categories to make sure there was plenty of room, but that didn't make a difference.

2. If there are no column options available with this on wordpress.com, could you suggest another theme that would be suitable for a newspaper-style blog? I'd like to have the main news story as the wide column at the top, with stories for each of the other categories - sports, entertainment, etc. - appearing in the smaller format I described above.

Basically, I would like some information displayed on an author's page. I have a paragraph of information as well as information that needs to be listed in more bullet point form. I learned that I couldn't have formatting on the author's about page, so I tried seeing if I could have the paragraph on the page and put the bullet information as an image that would display through gravatar on the author's wordpress page. But it doesn't look like I'm able to do that either since it doesn't show the gravatar images on the page other than the main picture. Does anyone have any suggestions of what I'm overlooking or what other people have done to post information with these limitations?
