Question: can I have the thumbnails in rows, close together, rather than in three columns? - which takes up a lot of space.
Also, any tips on editing them - as they are timelined. Do I just click Show, if there are duplicates in one post, or if it contains images from other posts?

Dear wp community, I want to attach a thumbnail gallery carousel to my posts, of the images in each one. Does the "Manifest" wp theme support it? I went into Support - including the link which "Timethief" suggested, and tried every way to access my gallery and display it, but I seem to miss a vital link. When I upload a new image, and click on Save All at the bottom left hand corner, the gallery does not appear. In Settings/Media/Image Carousel, the right buttons (seem to be) highlighted, but again nothing happens after I Save.
CAN ANYONE TELL ME HOW THE SHORTCODE button above the visual editor works? I tried typing [gallery] in it - again, no result.
I have published just a couple of trial posts on this blog, and drafted a lot more, and would much appreciate your help. With thanks to all - Jane

Gallery settings on page is not updating? It says whoops system error.

I can't repeat this, so I think it must have been a temporary issue. If you're still seeing the "whoops" error, please let me know the URL where I can see it happening. I tested gallery settings in my own test blog, and it worked for me without any troubles just now.

I am trying to set my Gallery page to display carousel.

You must insert a gallery to do that, as justjennifer mentioned, but the post you linked has images all inserted separately. See this help page for instructions about how to add a gallery instead of individual images:
http://en.support.wordpress.com/images/gallery/

I also would like to know how to get the three columns to set in and to have all images one size my gallery settings are not taking . ?

That's because you have inserted separate images, not a gallery, on http://scsurfbutler.com/photo-gallery-2/family-friends-gallery/

Have you enabled in your Settings>Media Settings that all Galleries should display in the tiled mosaic, or added the type="rectangle" to your Gallery shortcode? If so, there will not be any columns or same size thumbnail images.

The tiled mosaic automatically fills the entire width of the content area and images are randomly shown at different sizes; you don't have any control over that. Additionally, the tiled mosaic appears to ignore the columns settings (in addition to orderby and size settings if you've used them).

If you want your Gallery thumbnail images to appear as thumbnails in 3 columns, you will have to disable the "tiled mosaic" display or remove the type="rectangle" from the Gallery shortcode.

As far as using the Image Carousel with your Galleries, make sure it is enabled under your Settings>Media Settings.

bakearama: Nope. Not yet. I'm sorting through pages of online helps and other ideas to see if I can figure it out.
Probably would help me more if I weren't so scattered these past few days - and had a couple of hours to dedicate just to this.

Whatever you read was wrong. There is no upgrade required to have multiple galleries on one page in a free hosted WordPress.com blog. To have multiple galleries on the same page you will need to attach all of the images to the page first, and then use short codes to designate which images you want included in each gallery. http://support.wordpress.com/images/gallery/#gallery-shortcode.
After you upload the images go to Media > Library, hover over each image name, note its ID number at the end of the info displayed in the status/progress bar of your browser, then go to the page editor, switch to the HTML editor, and use the gallery shortcode image ID number for the images you want to include.
