The index at search.wordpress.com is updated instantly. If your post doesn’t show up in search results, please make sure you check here > http://en.support.wordpress.com/wordpresscom-search/#missing-posts
Also take careful note of this entry as well please > global tags > missing posts http://en.support.wordpress.com/global-tags/#missing-posts
There seems to be a prevalent misconception that the global tag pages and wordpress.ocm search results result in a flow of traffic to blogs. It's actaully search engines that send significant traffic to blogs.

re: global tags
It's my experience that unless one blogs on the featured topics on the most popular tag pages like these ones below there is no significant flow of traffic from global tags pages or from WordPress.com search

I decided to check out my blog through WP's search on the topics page. I entered in various different terms to bring up my blog. SEO which I use on my blog on a regular basis, example: Sardinia, Sardegna, My Sardinian Life, La Mia Vita Sarda ... etc. But my blog did not come up, not once. Not even on the first, second, third pages, nope nothing.

Why?

I have plenty of content, all tagged. Why would this be?

Thanking you in advance.

What do you want to bet that the search function turns out to be precisely as useless as the forum search is right now? Either that or the search function's loss of functionality is somehow related to implementing this search across WP.com. Dear god, if forum threads turn up in "Related" I'm going to smash this damn computer right through the bars on the window and the orderlies won't like that.

Quoting: WordPress founder Matt Mullenweg announces two new features coming to WordPress.com (the company’s hosted blogging platform) this week: search and related items. While Mullenweg is sparse on details, he says of the new features (at approx. 32:10) “you have to analyze the text and find the most relevant things … across more than 4 million posts per month.“

=============

I love the idea of being able to search across all WP.com blogs. That would be great and lead me to blogs I haven't encountered before.

I'm not so sure about this Related Posts stuff. I hope it's optional. I have a nightmarish vision of some damned popup occurring when someone is reading one of my posts. Something like that awful Snap! popup.
