Came across a string in GlotPress I couldn't make heads or tails of it. It says Post Post and can be found here:

What does this string mean? Where is it used? I need some context to make a translation.

few thoughs:
1. translate string which you commonly see, start with whose strings which you see each day.
2. you can extract and translate only needed part(for linux users):
#eg. you want translate theme "notepad"
$ pogrep wp-content/themes/pub/notepad --search locations -i 'wpcom-lt.po' -o wordpress-notepad-theme-translation.po
and you'll can translate your used theme. i don't think command don't needs comments.
3. translation online is hard work, if you translate offline you'll have such tools as(all translation apps has same features):
search and replace
search with regular expressions
translation memory
dictionary in same window as translation

GlotPress interface indicates string priority order: high (↑), normal (no special marker), low (↓), and hidden (× – not shown for regular users).

When translating WordPress.com, it is best to translate strings in the order of priority. High priority strings are those that are associated with the new features or more visible elements of the interface, low priority strings are less visible/important, and hidden strings are generally not shown to regular WordPress.com users.

Hidden strings, however, are included in .po export files (it would be ideal to exclude them from export, but right now we don't have a way to do that automatically). Normally they are placed in the end of the file. So if you are a validator using an external tool like Poedit and then re-importing , make sure that you are translating the strings from the beginning of the file, rather than the end. We all want your translations to be visible and useful for as many users as possible!

I recently noticed a high number of hidden/low-priority strings for the following languages: Swedish, Thai, Turkish. Something to keep in mind, so that you spend your translation time most effectively.

Also, I found 'load more posts' already translated, waiting for approval. While 'in' (for categories) is really hard to find, since search results show over 900 subpages. Would you be able to find it and translate into "w"?

Hi,

I've set language in Settings > General as pl Polish, changed interface language into Polish as well, but still I have couple of English words in my Polish blog. How can I change it?

i.e.: 'in' Category - on the left, close to comments
'Load more photos' - bottom of page
'RSS subscription' - unabled at the moment

If there's no way to change it, can I delete 'in'? How?
I could also change 'Load more photos' into no. of subpage, which would be even better. How do I do that?

Hi Martin,

Thanks again for pointing out the changes. I was the one who had wrongly assumed that merging .org/.com translation is okay but I really should have checked before going ahead.

Some backstory - I am a Japanese translator myself for both .org and .com. I also had helped Korean .com/.org translator coordination & talked to some other language communities in the past. I now fully understand the situation in German translation. I apologize for making a wrong assumption and causing some of the strings to get overwritten.
(zodiac1978, thanks for your input too!)

To remedy the situation, I re-imported the German .po file archived from before my merge took place (October 2nd). 425 translations were added back. Could you spot check to see that previous translations are recovered?

Again, thank you for your help in translating WordPress.com. I will make sure to communicate better in the future, and please let me know if you have any question.

Like Torsten said, no real communication. I'm not even a member of the WP.org translation team. I've occasionally translated some strings in the .org GlotPress like for the WordPress iOS App (even though I don't own an iPhone or IPad). That's all.

Apart from that I spend my time 100% at WordPress.com. Forum, Support pages, WP.com GlotPress. That makes me a WordPress comy I believe :lol: Looking forward to a Wordcomp should there ever be one. ;)

I am in the translator team from wp.org Germany, but there is no real communication in the team itself or helpful starting pages, a glossary, etc. - the people at dotorg are mainly working on their own ...

I've tried to start a collaboration with them on WordCamp 2011 and now I am in the team, but I think they don't contribute to (or use) wordpress.com ...

It would be really helpful to know where the imported strings came from. Is the importing maybe done on a regular basis or via scheduled task?

The strings were brought in from the German dotorg translation projects. It is not a scheduled task, it was a one-off (done in the order to bring up the number of translated German strings, there's more context to this that I'll be sharing later). In general, I recommend that dotorg/dotcom teams communicate and collaborate on things like terminology/vocabulary. For a number of languages, these are the same people so normally it's not an issue. Sharing strings across related translation projects is a good practice in terms of efficiency and consistency. In this case, to remedy the two specific issues that you pointed out (and potentially others), the plan is to overwrite those strings with the versions that existed prior to October 3rd. If you notice any others, please let me know. By the way, do you and Thorsten communicate regularly with dotorg German contributors, or mainly work on your own?

what about successfully importing a string with missing plurals?

That looks like a GlotPress bug, unfortunately :(. The string imported causing the trouble seems to be this one. If you wish to test this (using import to if an identical original string without a plural form would overwrite an existing string with a plural form, leaving the plural empty) and file a trac ticket, it would be very helpful.

Disagreement is one thing but what about successfully importing a string with missing plurals? The final result is the deletion of a valid plural. That can't be right.

It would be really helpful to know where the imported strings came from. Is the importing maybe done on a regular basis or via scheduled task? If so it might be better to correct the wrong strings in the original than constantly changing back strings in the WordPress.com translation system.

Hi Martin, .po import overwriting the previous translations is a feature of GlotPress, this is how it's currently set up. The idea is that whatever is imported is the latest and greatest - which usually works fine, except when there is a disagreement about translations. I'm looking further into this, thanks for your patience.
