Heya!

I've gone ahead and made that change for you. It does indeed require a change in your nameservers in the first place, so you'll receive an email about that, but at least your IP is now pointed at your shared hosting with GoDaddy.com.

So you know, in the future should GoDaddy perform any sort of migration for your site that results in a change of your IP, you'll need to let us know so that we can update your domain name to the new IP. This will allow your site to remain up!

Your mistake is Godaddy support - they should support the name servers - or at least the last several people that have moved their site to Godaddy just changed the name servers - did the one tech tell you why they wanted an A Record type change? The name servers are much easier to do and from what the staff have said in the past much more reliable -

Hi there,

Pointing your domain using A records is a somewhat complicated proposition in our system. I can do it for you however.

If you'd like me to go in and change your A record so it's pointed correctly towards that IP, I certainly can! Or you can change your nameserver as suggested by GoDaddy (and which I also suggest), by following this help article:

Hi All,

Thank you in advance for your patience in assisting a WordPress newcomer.

I registered and purchased my .com domain through WordPress last month and recently purchased hosting through GoDaddy in order to install a custom theme.

In order to avoid the fee and wait time of transferring my domain to GoDaddy, GoDaddy says to change the A record to 173.201.93.1. One support person has told me to also change the Nameservers to NS31.domaincontrol.com and NS32.domaincontrol.com but another support person has told me to leave the name servers as the default WordPress ones. I have left them with WordPress but am now being told by GoDaddy that my domain is not pointing to their host because I have multiple A records attached to my DNS.

Can you tell me how I make sure there is only a single A record listed and if I should change the name servers to point to GoDaddy?

Thank you!

I'm transferring my website to GoDaddy and they say I have to update my DNS records so that my doman "points to" their servers. Apparently I have to add an "A" Record onto my WordPress DNS registration or something? They gave me a sequence of some numbers, which I assume is the new record. WordPress instructions involve adding code and I'm SO lost, not to mention very frustrated. How do I add this A record to my DNS???

I can appreciate your frustration and thanks for your patience with me (a lowly volunteer!)

This page details the instructions for getting the authorization code. http://en.support.wordpress.com/domains/transfer-domain-registration

You'll need your customer number and set a password from your Dashboard (Store->Domains->Domain Administration->Transfer ownership to another registrar), then return to that page to access the domain manager.

The domain manager will allow you to unlock your domain and request the authorization code to be sent to you via email.

I could be wrong, but I think WordPress.com's domain system is built upon the same software as GoDaddy's. The screenshots look like GoDaddy, but isn't.

Cheers!
