I finally heard back on this from WordPress support. Apparently if maps.google.com is used instead of google.com/maps, that fixes things. I've tried it once, and it does! Maybe the documentation should reflect that. Well it's good to have something which works. Thanks, JustJennifer, for your help on this.

Yeah, thanks JustJennifer. I put in an official request to WordPress support, but 5 days later have not heard anything. I'm surprised that an official, documented function fo WordPress fails in this way. It's really needed for a number of sites I look after.

That last one is coming up "googleapps" not "googlemaps" and perhaps this forum post will be relevant for you http://en.forums.wordpress.com/topic/embedding-google-map-appears-blank?replies=7#post-799318

Otherwise I'm stumped. I can't reproduce this problem using a PC and Chrome, whether I'm logged in or not to my Google account. I'll tag this for Staff attention, but I hope that perhaps another user might have an idea. Sorry I couldn't be of more help.

If I go to google.com instead of google.com.au to get the maps, the following code is generated, but it doesn't display anything on the page:

Well I just tried it on another browser (Safari), not logged in to Google, and it's still just converted into links, not maps:

It's definitely saved the screen refreshed, so caching is not the issue. It's in processing by WordPress that it is converted from <iframe>blah blah blah</iframe> to blah blah.

I've tried it with different themes, too, in case there's involvement with the theme, but it's still happening.

Frustrating.

On my test site, I grabbed the code for your second example directly from Google Maps and pasted it in a post on my site and WordPress.com changed it to the shortcode without problem. But, copying and pasting the code you gave above in my test post, it did not change to the shortcode.

So you might want to give the following information:
What OS and browser are you using? (try clearing your browser cache and cookies)
Are you logged into Google or not when grabbing the code?

I'm having difficulty getting the Google Maps shortcode to work. And yes, I've tried the prescribed method of getting the embed code from Google Maps and putting into the page and letting WordPress figure out how the shortcode should be formatted, and I've tried doing it manually, and both ways fail. I've tried doing it from google.com.au/maps and google.com/maps, and get the same result

How can I get maps working on wordpress.com?

I took a look at the source code for that, and it is a seriously nasty pile of code. which is why it loads so incredibly slowly. It also uses a bunch of code that is not allowed here. Quite truthfully, if that is the only way to embed an interactive Google map, I'll never be embedding one into any of my sites, or into any of my client's sites.

If Google is responsible for coming up with that code, they should be arrested.

There is no FTP access to free hosted wordpress.com blogs and we cannot upload individual plugins into our blogs here. It's the interactive part that is problematic. No you cannot use JavaScript because the software will strip it out. http://en.support.wordpress.com/code/

Well, first of the topic is a bit misleading, i know i can add Google maps to my blogs hosted on wordpress.com but my question is if what this guy has done: http://addictedtojulmust.se/julmustkartan.html is that some sort of plugin he put to his wordpress powerd blog (i.e. he has a server and just uses wordpress) or is this possible to achieve with the wordpress.com hosting also?

Since its in swedish i might have to explain what the link is showing: Its a interactive google maps map where you can select what things to see on the map. Shown here is when in sweden you can find different types of softdrinks.

Support confirm the problem with "advanced" map.
For now, no way to have a map with points, lines, ... as allowed with kml

Talk to staff. Google maps embed just fine here. I have no idea what google spreadsheet does to them that wordpress does not like, but I doubt it is a wordpress bug.

Modifying which code in google spreadsheet. It generates valid kml code which can be read in google earth and by google maps. That's only a wordpress problem.

It's a bug discussion not why I do this. But I explain:
doing this allow simply to list location and dynamically geocode them and generate corresponding map with some legend like following links

It seemed wordpress.com doesn't manage well the multiple arguments in calling google maps, so it try to display an incorrect kml url reference.

I just tried it in my test blog and it works. Make sure you paste the embed code in the visual, not the html, editor.

If it still doesn't work, you can probably turn it into the proper shortcode manually. Example:

Copy the src part of the code (from http to embed), add the querystrings for width and height, enclose in googlemaps shortcode brackets:

Embedding Google Maps still does not work though. WordPress does not translate the code from google maps to what is needed.

The facility worked a few months back as i have maps already embedded with no problems, but when i try to add new ones. No luck at all.

I am trying to embed the google maps html onto my wordpress webpage but it is giving me a "forbidden" error.

I have copied the HTML given by Google maps and pasting it into the HTML section of the wordpress page. When i try to save or publish the page it tells me this:

"Forbidden

You don't have permission to access /wp-admin/page.php on this server.

Additionally, a 404 Not Found error was encountered while trying to use an ErrorDocument to handle the request.
Apache Server at http://www.am1006.com Port 80"

Has anyone else experienced this problem?

It's always a good idea to be clear as to exactly what you are referring to by providing a link. Also I note that the title of this thread is "google map support" so if and when this thread goes into the forum search box no one will be able to retrieve whatever information is turned up about the map program you are pointing to. Another good idea would be to start a new thread with a specific title and put the link in it.

Has anyone used Wayfaring.com to create a map and then post it to their blog? Wayfaring says that you can just copy and paste their code into your blog but I have been unable to do so as of yet.
