Hello! I’m just a 30 (soon to be 31) year-old DC resident who is a Texan at heart. I enjoy writing and making people laugh – two things I hope to accomplish on the blog. My posts are pretty regular in frequency but pretty random in content. I write about whatever is amusing, interesting or annoying me at any given moment.

By day I’m a technical writer for a military contracting firm, and in my free time I enjoy writing, reading, watching TV and torturing my cat by picking her up even though she clearly dislikes it.

@alleycat86 and author jdhughes - Along the Poe lines I think E.T.A. Hoffmann is definitely worth checking out, too, plus Arthur Machen. The King In Yellow by Chambers has plenty of moments, too.

Theres a link to a good Author. He has an amazing grasp of both horror and mystery, and his perspectives draw you into those plots incredibly. He makes you feel like you are getting in on a big secret with every aspect of the plot you unveil.

Phillip K Dick is a good place to go for good scifi/mystery. He wrote the original short story that became the movie Bladerunner, and Through A Scanner Darkly. He's great for excellent short stories.

Edgar Allen Poe is always a good old-school fallback. Read The Pit And The pendulum for a good dose of intensity.

I'm a huge fan of horror and mystery. Lately I've started reading sci-fi and urban fantasy. I'm currently reading the Hollows series by Kim Harrison.

I am a sci-fi nerd, and addicted to fantasy. I'm cracking through the last of the Wheel of Time series and need to get my paws on Terry Goodkind's last books from the Sword of Truth series. :(

Slaughter House 5, by Kurt Vonnegut.

Brilliant.

Dune, by Frank Herbert

Immersive.

Lolita, by Vladimir Nabokov

Rythmic.

Theres a broad swath of tastes and styles. Each of those is a masterpeice of their genre, see what you like!

I read all types of books classics, thrillers, fantasy, anything really. Although I do have to say lately romance books have become somewhat annoying so I'll be avoiding those for time time being. Currently reading Princess by Jean Sasson, amazing amazing story about the life of a real Arabian princess and very funny too so check it out if you're looking for a good read and something a little different =)

Heres one for you @bblog45 The Boisterous Sea of liberty - a documentary history of america from discovery through civil war. I confess I only read the first 1/3 of it but it shows all the letters and documents written and back in that time you know every one had excellent speech standards. Some of the word-craft is so superb it ought to be framed and hung up. When I got to the part about the French and Indian war, I was so inspired I even wrote a song about it.

My love of Chopin must be more obvious than I thought! Thanks for the recommendation. I'll definitely check it out. Did you know that there is also a book of Chopin's letters? That would most likely be a great read.

Easier to say that I don't read romance and mystery, all other books are fair game. The pic of Dorian Grey can be a bit tedious but Oscar Wilde is just amazing. @somataslut Based on your blog Let me recommend something you might like. George Sand the search for love. It's a biography about the notorious cross-dressing feminist who was also the long-time lover of Chopin. She used to sit under the piano as he composed. Boy what I wouldn't give to hear what she heard. Poetry, Mythology, and don't forget fairytales all make good inspiration for artists. I read Anna Karanina all the way through hoping at some point it would develop a plot. Heads up.. it never did.

It wasn't comical, in that moment I felt under-educated and a future outcast in the reply field. I was unprepared and I should have said...

Really wow, mythology and poetry. Those are very inteesting topics ad very scholarly choices.

I stick with more of Historical memoirs from WWII, Vietnam, the Revolutionary. Auto biographies from people I find interesting or their lives were/are.

After I was not forced to read poetry I stopped. Not that I don't like some, there are some very beautiful poems written but when I read I try relax my brain.

I couldn't handle reading what you read, I would have a headache from re-reading and analyzing and getting upset.

Not a comical post.

You should definitely check out Let The Right One In. It is a beacon of light in the murky darkness of what now defines the vampire genre!
And also, House of Leaves. I've just started it, and it's wonderful and creepy. Plus, it has footnotes, and sometimes those footnotes have footnotes.

I just realised ive way too many genres i read,i will though try to sum them up.
Basically i look for an author who inspires,who has a unique way of storytelling.
I adore fictional works,creative pieces,anything that holds my interest throughout.
I am looking for a voice,a continuous train of thought.I dont mind too much if at times an author goes overly factual,or is too involved in the world he/she has created,i love seeing that,an immersion into the characters by the author,who is simple an observer telling you[the reader] what happens
As i said i just enjoy picking up anything that seems interesting,from cook books,to a Stephen king novels,latest gothic romance book,travelling books,autobiographies,to scientific and engineering books.
goes without saying i read ALLOT of blogs now too,finding some very inspirational stuff on here too.

Makes a weird frowny face @Balladeer @wearepositive. Ancient mythology, greek comedies, whats that now?

The name James Joyce always freaks me out due to the fact I hear James Earl Jones when ever he is mentioned.

I just finished a book that had nothing to do with any genre either of you mentioned. (packs up her auto-biographies and memoirs and goes off to the next bench...alone)

Things the grandchildren should know by Mark Oliver Everett. He's the singer with Eels and his life has been unbelievably tragic, yet the book is somehow uplifting.

@wearepositive: I was such a James Joyce geek years ago that every June 16th I would mentally count off what "chapter" it was for each hour of the day. I love Finnegan's Wake more these days, though.

I prefer young adult novels, memoirs, and classic novels (I just picked up The Picture of Dorian Grey a few weeks back). However, I haven't been reading as much as I would like.

Though I often have to read out of them for college, I have yet to develop a taste for textbooks.

I really like Gregory Maguire's style as well as James Joice's style and voice and their breaking of the rules of grammar and literature and social acceptance. I love writers who are able to voice what they feel, whether it makes any sense to the reader or not. There's a certain beauty to it, I believe. In my novella "Smoke" (read it here: http://wearepositive.wordpress.com/smoke/chapter-1/), I tend to use a lot of loose, unfitting descriptions to better emphasize my love for this style. I try a lot to write like them and rarely to I pull it off perfectly.

For example, in James Joyce's famously demonstrated novel, Ulysses, he writes this: "Then, catching sight of Stephen Dedalus, he bent towards him and made rapid crosses in the air, gurgling in his throat and shaking his head. Stephen Dedalus, displeased and sleepy, leaned his arms on the top of the staircase and looked coldly at the shaking gurgling face that blessed him, equine in its length, and at the light untonsured hair, grained and hued like pale oak."

I mean, holy crap, he's a genius without wanting to be one.

So that's my taste in literature.

I read a lot of mythology, history, ancient greek comedies, fragments of Puck magazine from the 1800's, epic, lyric and comic poetry. As for fiction I got through most of the classics and semi-classics years ago and these days I often read the collected stories of the old pulp heroes of the 1930's.
