That is where your blog posts go, so as long as you are using WordPress, you can't trash it. You can fail to make posts, and use a custom menu to hide it, but you can't trash it.

I'm working on creating my first blog/website. The template I've chosen, Responsive, seems to have created a default Home page. I can see this when I review the pages, but not in the backend to be able to edit it? I'd like to either edit or trash this default page.

No. Every WordPress blog by default has comments open on all pages and posts. if that's not the case with your blog then you changed the settings.

http://www.sweetphi.com/ is not a free hosted WordPress.com blog. It,s running on WordPress.ORG software and it's wearing the WordPress.ORG version of the theme. If you don't have a username account at WordPress.ORG click http://wordpress.org/support/ and register one on the top right hand corner of the page that opens, so you can post to the support forums there and receive advice from WordPress.ORG bloggers.

We can override the default settings and enable or disable future comments on any individual post or page. See the guide here please > http://en.support.wordpress.com/enable-disable-comments/

Note: By default, new blogs on WordPress.com will have the Discussion hidden. Your home page is set to a static page. If you navigate to that page's Edit screen, you can disable comments in the Discussion box.

Please read my previous reply more carefully: #a says you must first create a page in Pages > Add New and title it "News"; #b says open the Pages module in Appearance > Menus.

Anyway I've removed News and Home from the Menu.

However when I go to Pages it doesn't say view all, so maybe I'm in the wrong place. It does list all the pages but News isn't there. I think this is the wrong place actually as there's not an option of changing order, although I know I've seen that elsewhere.

Thanks. The posts page in settings, reading, doesn't give me the option of using news. It simply doesn't show it in the drop down list.

Raincoaster means Settings > Reading.
a) Did you create a page in Pages > Add New, title it "News", and set it as your posts page in Settings > Reading?
b) Assuming you've done that, you need to correct your custom menu, because at the moment it's the News tab that links to your blog front (the Home tab links to your welcome page itself). Go to Appearance > Menus, delete the Home and News items you have added, open the Pages module, click View All, select Home:Home and News, click Add to menu, drag to change their order, save.

On the Settings->General page, you've set your static page to be the landing page, but what did you delegate as the Posts page?

I've set my landing page to be a static page, which works fine. I've called it 'home'. Problem is that now my blog posts aren't visible. I've renamed them 'news'.

When I look at the 'menu structure' all the 4 pages and News section are there. However when I look at the website the News section is not there. Not sure why this should be. I know the data is still there, as if I click on Posts in dashboard they've not gone.

Can anyone help, please?

When you get to the home page, it shows all my posts in full form. I do not want the posts fully "open," rather I'd like the first paragraph or just a few sentences, whatever, showing when you get to my page. A summary as it were. I'd like people to have to click a button which says, say, "Click here to continue reading..." so it takes them to the actual page of the post where they can comment and like, etc.

So, I went to Settings > Reading, and I found an option stating,

"For each article in a feed, show (Full text) (Summary)."

So, last night, I clicked on summary, saved it, and went to my home page only to find that the full post was still showing.

My question, then, is this: What do I need to do make this so?

Up until my blog was mistakenly suspended, last Thursday, my static page's name was exactly what I wanted it to be: "What It's All About". Since then, it has transformed into the mundane "Home".

Last Thursday was 18 April. Here's a cached page from 14 April:

It shows "Home", so I'm not seeing any change, let alone an arbitrary one.

I do indeed, justpi. The menu is arranged by order numbers. I accept that a custom menu could get around the problem, but I'm confused as to how and why the name of the menu tab changed without warning in the first place. Surely that shouldn't happen? Is this some new WP feature or function that I missed being announced? It would seem rather worrying if arbitrary changes can occur without notice simply because a user isn't using a custom menu.

You mean the link in the top menu.
The items on your top menu aren't arranged alphabetically. We cannot tell if you did this by assigning order numbers or by creating a custom menu. If you did it the second way, you can go to Appearance > Menus, and edit the "Home" item to change its label. If you did it the first way, you need to create a custom menu first.

My guess is you still have a link to your old site in your custom menu, you can edit it in Appearance -> Menus, you should be able to edit the link under home.
