http://greatbigchoices.com/ appears to be working properly. Here's what I see: http://d.pr/i/8OdY/5oqPBhmt

When a domain is registered or altered, there is a process called propagation, where information about the domain name is passed to internet service providers all over the world. This process can take up to 72 hours (though usually much less). During that time, you may also receive a warning message in your browser about "redirect errors". Unfortunately, we have no control over this as it all depends on how often your internet service provider updates their records. Please rest assured that everything is proceeding normally with your domain.

If you still have trouble viewing the site after 72 hours has passed, please try clearing your browser's cache and cookies:
http://en.support.wordpress.com/browser-issues/#clear-your-cache-and-cookies

If that doesn't work, try clearing your local DNS cache:
http://www.opendns.com/support/article/68

Please let me know if you have any more questions.

Yes indeed it is expensive and time consuming and that's why I moved one of my domains back here to free hosting.

If the only reason you are moving is to monetize a blog and use plugins then I'm afraid you will be sad to find out that most bloggers, who move to self hosting with high expectations for making income discover that after their expenses are paid at the end of the year they make only pocket change. Been there - done that.

Hey everyone, I've never posted in these forums before so sorry if I do something wrong. :)

Anyway, I'm wondering about something. I'm thinking of making my website a .com and hosting it on Hostgator, which I will use to download WordPress.org.

But is there any way to sort of install WordPress on my current wordpress.com blog, and have it hosted on Hostgator? Or will I have to transfer it to the downloaded wordpress.org thingy? Sorry if I can't word it correctly...

I've built up some traffic and SEO on my current blog, and I don't want to lose it -- will I if I transfer the blog to WordPress.org downloaded from Hostgator?

Thanks!

Probably - the staff are the ones that can help with that -

I think that domain name cancellations are a two step process to make sure that a domain name is not cancelled by accident or if the person requesting the cancellation is asking for the correct solution

There are some timing issues with domain name cancellations - it is sort of like running down the hall trying to catch someone before they get out of the building

Some hosts build the cost of the registration into the host costs - don't know how Host Gator prices things - after 60 days you can also transfer the domain name to Host Gator so you only have one place to pay

Once you have your blog set up on Host Gator you can export your content from here and import the content to your new site -

Install jetPack on your new blog and ask the staff to transfer your email subscribers

Personally I never recommend letting a domain name go back to the wild - there is an entire industry devoted to buying expired domain names and holding them hostage

Yes, I considered doing that, but (I think) I will save money if I refund it and buy a package on HostGator.

If I keep my domain now, I will still have to buy a package from HostGator, which adds up to a total of about $25-$30. If I cancel and refund my domain now, I can buy the package and a domain for just about $10.

If I am wrong, please let me know.

What I actually want, is to get a self-hosted blog so I can monetize it. However, I don't know how to do this without losing all my current posts, pages, followers, etc.

I run a free blog at WordPress.com. Now I have decided to buy my own domain from HostGator, and their customer service said I will only need to point my new domain to WordPress servers, so I will need the WordPress nameservers to be able to change my domain's nameservers at HostGator.

So my question is: Where do I get the WordPress nameservers? And do I have to pay something to WordPress to do this?

Okay that's definitely a good idea for when people go to my blog. I still want to keep blogging on my blog but still confused on how I could attach it to my website. Because I feel like with two different urls, I won't be able to build sort of a system between my website and blog that's interconnected, you know what I mean? For example, as one grows I want the other to grow as well because they're connected with each other.

I know people with websites can easily make a blog and attach it to their website (www.example.com/blog), but doing the opposite of that seems kind of impossible.

Simplest way I can think of is to install the WP software on the new site and put a Sticky post on this site saying "We've Moved" to: (new address).

Anyone visiting the current WP.com site will see that post and can decide if they want to go there or not.

You could continue to post here at times or just stop posting here and make all new posts there.

So I'm creating a website but also buying a new url for it. I want to know if I can take the blog I have now and some how add it to my website? I want to make it so its like http://www.example.com/blog or blog.example.com or something along those lines when you click on my WordPress blog through my website.

The fact that they will have two different urls really confuses me, especially since I don't want my blog url being replaced by my new one because I have a lot of history behind it. So I'm thinking I won't be able to do blog.example.com unless they were both on the same url..? I don't know, this process is just really confusing and I would really appreciate some help!

Thanks.

Help!! I purchased (today!) lucretiafraser.net; then went to hostgator to set up self-hosting... and now, it is all a hotmess.

Do I need to choose another name? Nothing is working. I don't want another name, I don't want to lose the $$, either. I got an e-mail directing me to the admin dashboard, but the password does not work, and I am continually directed back to .com.... NOT .org.

I realize I did this backwards, but I can't be the first person this has happened to. Please help!!
