I started a blog using the Twenty twelve theme but I notice that it's simply cutting words off in the middle at the end of lines instead of moving them down to the next line. I would prefer not to have hyphens at the end of lines.

I've tried going into settings to change this, but don't see how it is possible. I've looked at other pages for my theme and they don't have this same problem. Please help.

First, if you only remove the special character code, the caption will remain in its original positioning, which doesn't make sense without the hyphen: you also need to change the horizontal positioning of the caption text (if I hid the stupid hyphen I'd make the text centered).
Second, things don't work that way on wordpress.com: you don't modify the original stylesheet, you add your changes in the CSS editor. To remove the hyphen and center the caption, you'd add this:

.wp-caption .wp-caption-text:before {
    display:none;
}
.wp-caption .wp-caption-text {
    text-align:center;
    padding:5px 7px 0;
}

Hi,
Reading through the forums i did not see an easy fix given for removing the hyphen that appears before the text in picture captions.
Here's what I did that removed it:

In style.css look for:
}
.wp-caption .wp-caption-text:before {
color: #666;
content:' \2014';
font-size: 14px;
font-style: normal;
font-weight: bold;
margin-right: 5px;
position: absolute;
left: 0px;
top: 7px;

Simply remove the \2014 (special character code) from the content line. They haven't shown up since.
Please be careful when modifying anything in WordPress so you don't F-up your blog, obviously i have just given my fix and cannot be held responsible...blah, blah
Happy Blogging!

Captioned images are preconfigured formulas you cannot modify (except if you have the paid CSS upgrade). If you want the same look but without the dash, you must remove the Image widget and use code in a Text widget instead:

<div class="wp-caption alignnone" style="width:187px;"><img style="width:177px;" src="IMAGE URL HERE" alt="DESCRIPTION HERE" /><p style="padding:12px 5px 0;">CAPTION TEXT HERE</p></div>

Note: the image you have used is 1600px wide. There's no point uploading such a large image when the maximum you can have in your sidebar is 177px: you're just wasting storage space and increasing the loading time of your page (also, when you use an Image widget, Internet Explorer may show the original instead of the automatically downsized version). Better downsize a copy of your image in an image editing application to a width of 177px, upload that copy in Media > Add New, copy the File URL and use that URL in the above code model. This will give you better quality as well, because images downsized by WP lose some color and sharpness.

/nod to TT

WordPress would have to do the hyphenation, and that is not built into this system. From my experience with copywriting and graphics design, we always kept hyphenation to a bare minimum and would generally work to force all hyphenated words to the next line. We also stayed away from fully-justified text since it is harder for people to read (even though page layout programs deal with fully justified text very well).

The web simply does not have that level of sophistication at this time, which is why I absolutely never fully-justify text on the web.

Advice: Do not mess with URLs. The software supplies them in the correct XHTML format.

This is probably like having your cake and eating it too, but is there any way to set up a fully justified blog post so that the reader's browser will insert hyphens at need? I dislike it when a line of text has big spaces in it, but if I put hyphens in, other people will have different text sizes set, different screen size, etc, and the end result for them is going to look wrong. Any idea how to resolve this? The particular post I'm experimenting with is: http://cindyinsd.wordpress.com/2010/05/01/walking-on-water-3/?preview=true&preview_id=835&preview_nonce=1c979a4f08 .
