I tried to reproduce the error you mentioned above but was unable to do so. Does the error still occur for you?

IE7 has not been supported for a year now. IE8 is almost history as well. The latest versions of the browser here are the ones that you need to focus on http://browsehappy.com

In IE7 and IE8, navigation bar links that have been visited do not display in the proper font/size. When a page is loading, visited navigation links momentarily display with the correct font, but then switch to the incorrect font by the time the page is fully loaded.

Everything works fine in IE9.

I was working with Twenty Twelve again today, and I noticed this change in the core WordPress code:

Twenty Twelve: implement better support for IE7 and IE8 (don't use mobile menu).

I should have noted that if you don't like the way the menu works in Twenty Twelve, you can always use an older theme that works with older browsers instead. Twenty Eleven is a good choice for that.

The menu you are seeing is not broken. Seeing the mobile menu on really old browsers is not a bug. The older, outdated browsers you are using are just not able to understand the latest coding practices used in Twenty Twelve, so the older browsers end up displaying the mobile version of the menu. Focusing on newer code practices for modern up-to-date browsers was a choice made by the Twenty Twelve theme developers.

Our lead theme developer commented on the issue in a core WordPress support thread here:

I see there's some debate surrounding the menu choice, you can follow along in that thread if you'd like to keep tabs on the issue. Note that Twenty Twelve is part of the core WordPress project. Instead of the menu, there is a menu button like in the mobile version. This problem appears when using Winxp with IE7,8. A lot of people wrote to me but I didn't know what they have meant until I searched this problem on the internet.

Hello,
I'm a teacher from a school in Germany using your new theme Twenty Twelve. I've read a lot about the problems with the menu and we do have these problems. That means many parents and even other teachers contacted me because they don't have a proper menu. My first question now is: Do you want so solve this problem or is this a kind of concept? So, if you don't solve this problem I'll take another theme. And the second question is: When do you want to solve it? This is very important for us. Thanks in advance!

The example hack you posted isn't valid CSS, and so that's why it's getting stripped.

I've also noticed it strips out any comments I put in the code. Is there anything I can do to prevent this?

Comments are currently removed by our CSS parser which is setup with some security precautions. Allowing comments, however, is on our todo list.

IE7 is not supported and has not been supported for some time now. IE9 is the latest stable version of the browser and both IE8 and IE9 are supported currently.

Hi, I'm trying to figure out how to apply IE 7 specific CSS hacks. For example, I'm using the Debut theme and the homepage lays new articles out in a grid. In IE 7 the floats are not applied correctly because the grid's divs are not all the same height. I'd like to make these the same height, but only in IE 7.

I tried using this style of hack:
#myDiv{ *height: 170px; }

WordPress.com seems to strip this out when saving the style sheet.

I've also noticed it strips out any comments I put in the code. Is there anything I can do to prevent this?

I apologize for the inconvenience, but we dropped support for IE7 for new themes. Our newest themes, including Oxygen, are tested in IE8 and higher.

I get an "Object expected" error every time I open my blog http://rachelshelleyrx.wordpress.com/ with IE8 (I'm using Win XP), the other browsers I tried (Firefox, Opera, Safari, Chrome) seem to work fine. The error message tells me the the error is created by character 1 of line 827, i.e.,

st_go({'blog':'34991109','v':'wpcom','user_id':'0','post':'964','subd':'rachelshelleyrx'});

which appears to be part of the WordPress stats JavaScript code(?!).

Is anyone seeing this error, too? Any idea how to deal with this?

I can not get the mobile version of website to pull up on a IOS/Iphone. I use oxygen theme. http://www.crossfittampabay.com When you pull up the mobile them there is no content and when you click on view full page its all scrambled. Need Help ASAP!!!!! Thanks!!!

I'm not surprised to hear that as IE9 is the latest version and IW10 is under development. WordPress.com has not supported IE6 or IE7 for a long time now. No web designers I know are focused on IE7 compatibility. See here please and acroll down http://en.blog.wordpress.com/2011/05/19/just-write/

I have created a new blog for staff in my workplace using the Oxygen theme. It appears fine using Firefox and Internet Explorer 8, but the homepage jumps around a few seconds after loading in Internet Explorer 7. Can anyone advise me on how to stop this? Not all staff's PCs will be upgraded to IE8.

Several email subscribers to the above blog are reporting problems with the links in their latest blog post emails. If they take the 'read more of this post' or the 'Trouble clicking?' links they get a screen returned saying 'Page not found'. If they click on the Home menu on that screen, the blog post they were trying to access comes up as expected. If the URL in their subscription email is clicked, the blog post is presented as expected.

The emails were generated on 17th January for readers in the UK. They are using IE7 or IE8 on a mixture of PCs and laptops. I can also see the problem from Chrome on my laptop.

Clip is a little used CSS property I think. :)

The CSS editor will only work will well-formed CSS. Maybe there's a different way to do what you want that works just as well. Could you post a little more detail about what you're trying to do and perhaps include a sample page for us to look at?

So... to get the clip to work on IE7, I need to remove the commas from the rect definition. However, the CSS tool strips all spaces when I do so and then the declaration doesn't work in any browser. Any idea how to get around this?

Yes, i agree, i'm not too bothered about IE5 and IE6 at the moment because they are archaic browsers to say the least!. It's surprising considering how fast the web industry changed that people still cling on to systems that are a decade old yet still expect everything to work perfectly.

IE7 unfortunately still gives quite a few hits, so this really needs resolving.

I'll certainly have a look at the CSS validator, thanks for the tip!

The Akismet spam filter has me by the throat at the moment and has tossed two of my replies here into the dungeon, but I'll try again. Do a CSS validation report on the site and look through the CSS errors. IE is notoriously rigid on CSS versions and the theme you are using is CSS2.1 and you have a good bit of CSS3 things in the CSS. It would be worth taking a look at those items.

On the IE5 and IE6 thing, the web has to walk away from those at some point, and that has happened. It's either that or all the great new capabilities of the new standards have to be left on the shelf and you allow the lowest common denominator to control what you do.

Fingers crossed this get through instead of being caught in the spam filter.

Thanks for your comments. I wouldn't be surprised that support may well be dropped, after all it is two major versions of IE ago, so the reasons for people sticking with IE7 are getting fewer and fewer. However, our tracking shows that some people still use IE6 and VERY occasionally, IE5!
