Whatever the reason for the increase in spam, it is NOT the fault of the volunteers on here; nor is it within their powers to * fix* the problem. Do what most of us do here...delete or mark as spam. It's not too difficult really.

Well that's well and good - BUT I've still seen an increase in what gets by the "algorithm" ; the "filter" ; the "strategy" ; call it what you want. People have figured a way to beat it, sneak it thru.
--Hopefully there is a system of continued, ongoing, improvement, to make it better each month, each quarter, etc. - OR is this it, it's done, it's as good as it's ever going to get, and no one is working on it ever again ?

Akismet is remarkably accurate. The vast and overwhelming majority of all so-called information on the internet is spam. Over 80% of all so-called comments submitted to .wordpress.com blogs every day are spam. The worst of all spam containing malware and viruses is not sent to us. It's removed as it could bring down many blogs if opened. The rest is an can be examined in your dashboard > Comments > Spam

If Akismet has sequestered these spam comments simply click "empty spam" button. On the spam that Akismet catches it takes only seconds to click "empty spam" and you don't even have to click "empty spam" if you don't want to. Akismet will maintain comments it has caught for 15 days from the time they were received, and then it will delete the comment automatically.

If you get spam that slips by Akismet then mark it as spam (do not delete it) and over time Akismet will learn it's spam.

Went from one or two every other day needing deletion ; to about 10 a day needing deletion. Anything change in the algorithm, did spammers find an Achilles heel, loophole, opening, etc. ? Many get caught, but lately it seems a few more are slipping thru requiring manual deletion.

Generally the WP.com stats filter out bots entirely. There's a slim chance it could be some kind of unidentified bot, but it'll probably turn up in referrers sooner or later. I don't know why but they do seem to lag.

Thanks for the quick response! I'd love to think I'm being mentioned on mass media outlets but very highly unlikely. Any chance it could be a bot or do all bots come in through referrers?

Usually the Referrer information lags for some reason. But it could also be a media mention: newspaper, tv, or radio. That typically drives no-referrer traffic to your home page.

Hi, I have a sudden spike on my blog today; almost 300+ in less than 2 hours but there are no referrers, and 90% views are of my home page (I usually promote using specific post links). Any possible explanations?

Hello all :)
Me and a friend have just set up a new blog. Really enjoying being on WordPress and have been reading some really good stuff so far!
Sadly though, we have 0 views all together on everything.
I was just wondering if anyone had advice on how to increase readership? Like sites where you can ask people to look at your blog and stuff like that?
I tried searching but couldn't find any topic discussing this, if there already is one that I've missed, please let me know and provide a link.

My blog, Apple 24 Seven, has just been accepted into the AdWords program, and although it now has an advertisement visible, I was wondering if there was any way to increase the number of ads.
There is currently just one ad below the most recent post, and I would like to have one or two more on the sidebar or somewhere else on the site.

On that note, I'm really quite surprised at the effect joining Empire Avenue has had on my blog readership. I can confirm via the Whosamungus widget that it doubles the number of people on my blog at any given moment. Of course, I did connect my blog with my profile there, and am in the category "Blogger".

The easiest thing that I am finding is you increase your traffic simply by networking with other bloggers. Read their blogs, comment, etc. You can make some great new friends along the way.

Remember, though, that unless you write brilliantly, there are not that many people in the world who are going to be interested in how you, a total stranger, feel.

Recognizing this is actually quite freeing. If you want to be popular with strangers, post pictures of cats. The internet can't get enough cats.

If you want to express yourself, divorce it from an expectation of popularity. Think about school; there were people there who always told everyone exactly how they felt about everything, whether or not they were asked. How popular were they? Not very.

If that’s not your style, then craft a brief introduction that will allow potential readers to know what to expect when clicking in to view your blog.

I've been experiencing the same problem! I wanted to stay anonymous so I posted a smilar post on the Showcase forum. It's a really good place to let people know about your blog and definitely increasing my views and subscriptions!

Successful blogs draw between 30 - 60 % of their incoming targeted readers. from search engine referrals. Targeted readers are those who arrive on your site because they already have an interest in the content your posts and blog contain. They have typed keywords and phrases into search engines and located your posts in the SERPS (search engine page results) and clicked through. The fact that targeted readers already have an interest in the content in your posts means they are likely to read more than one post, more likely to leave comments, and more likely to become regular readers/subscribers.

Consequently, the first step for any blogger to take to establish a flow of targeted readers to their blog is learning and applying the use of basic SEO elements so their posts and blog are actually accessible to potential readers, who use search engines.

One last note...when I first started blogging, I threw up new content as quickly as I could. That was my focus, keep it fresh, etc.

Now I know it's about the quality. If readers are going to stick around, you gotta give them a reason to.

Numbers don't seduce me, loyal readers do.
