I want to display just the summary of the latest posts on the front page, but instead it displays the full text. How do I change this? I changed the option in the Reading Settings from 'full text' to 'summary' but it stil displays the full text of posts.
In coming across a similar program, I saw someone say to replace
<?php the_content(); ?>
with
<?php the_excerpt(); ?>
in my home.php or index.php . <--But I don't know where to find that to replace it? Can someone tell me where? I definitely don't understand website code like some people, but on Tumblr I've replaced certain codes with others, etc. I just don't know where to find that on WordPress. Help?
Same thing for my Archives. If someone clicks on my posts for October (for eg) in my archives, I want those be shown in summary too, but they're not.
I'd appreciate if someone could give me a step-by-step process or explanation, thank you!

My purpose in doing this is so that the WordPress pages will not be buried and will have a simple url such as: http://www.example.com/marysmith
instead of http://www.example.com/teachers/marysmith

I have been doing some work on a friend's website...

I have several blogs and am decently familiar with wordpress and back end website things, but I'm certainly no pro and could use some guidance here.

This guy's website http://www.slmarket.com started years ago as a regular html based website. It evolved into a blog based site, but behind a couple of the links, it still takes you to parts of the old html site, fine.

The home page of the site was a wordpress blog page... then you could follow a couple of links to the old html site.

Specifically, when you went to buy his book, it took you to the old html site.

I made some changes to the html portions of the site, the buy a book page, which was the index.html file. I re-uploaded it to the root folder (public_html folder).

Ever since... that file is the one that comes up when you type in the url: http://www.slmarket.com
... it goes right to the 'buy a book' page... when in fact, we want...

the 'www.slmarket.com/news' page (one of the wrodpress blog pages) to appear as the 'home page' / main page when you type in http://www.slmarket.com

I think i have to make changes to the index.php file to make this happen... am I right?

I've got to have that slmarket.com/news page show as the home page.. any help, GREATLY appreciated.

Thanks a bunch.

Dave

If what you want to do on your free hosted wordpress.com blog is create website like structure then that can be done. Staff have provided this support documentation entry for those who want to structure their blog like a website which is what you want to do. > http://en.support.wordpress.com/using-wordpress-to-create-a-website/

What’s critical is to understand when creating a website structure is the following:
1. The differences between pages and posts > http://en.support.wordpress.com/post-vs-page/

2. There is only ONE dynamic page in a blog for posts and we cannot post to more than that one page. When we publish a post it automatically appears on the running page for posts and also on the Categories pages and Archives pages.

3. We organize our posts by assigning Categories to them. Although there is only ONE dynamic page in a blog for posts and we cannot post to more than that ONE page, we can create the appearance we have done so by creating a custom menu. In that custom menu you will be displaying Categories in tabs along the horizontal navigation.

These are the how-to instructions:

1. You create a custom menu. http://en.support.wordpress.com/menus/

2. You add the Categories you want to display and arrange them in the order you want.

3. Then you add and drop and drag the sub-categories below the appropriate Categories, and when you have everything arranged in the menu that you want you save the menu.

4. Go to the “theme location” module at upper left on the menu page. Select your custom menu name from the pull-down labeled “primary location.” Click the save button in that module.

Note: If you wish you can also include pages and sub-pages of your own choice and custom links in your custom menu as well.

I am trying to get certain categories to display only on certain pages (so that not all categories of post show up on the main page, and that the posts on the main page don't show up on the ETC page I would like to make). I have found the follow resources through google to aid in this:

http://codex.wordpress.org/Category_Templates\
http://codex.wordpress.org/Using_Themes
http://codex.wordpress.org/Stepping_Into_Templates

as background, and most importantly:
http://codex.wordpress.org/Function_Reference/query_posts#Exclude_Categories_From_Your_Home_Page

However, small problem... These pages all have me editing a document called index.php. Where the heck is this file? I can't see any place from the dashboard to access it.

I'm pretty tech and web savvy, but I have found the WP backend incredibly unintuitive...

I want to add a link that is visible on my Dashboard Page to a secure web page. I do not want this link on my Blog page. I have successfully edited index.php in wp-admin to show this link but when I save the file the redirect to the login page is disabled and the page is accessible by simply typing in the URL to that page at the administrator level.

Am I not permitted to edit this file ? If I am what do I need to do to make sure the redirect to the WordPress login page is ivoked when trying to access the page.

For the record in case someone searches and finds this post. The problem was index.php was not recognized as an index file on my server (windows based) I had to go to the web options, directory options and add it.

Sorry, you are in the wrong forum and need to head over to http://wordpress.ORG/support/ as that blog is self-hosted and self-hosted wordpress blogs using the software from wordpress.ORG are supported there.

These forums are for those hosted here on the wordpress.COM free hosting service and things here work differently and our answers typically will not work for you.

If you do not know the difference, see this support document for the differences: http://support.wordpress.com/com-vs-org/ .
