Your blog is hosted here on wordpress.com so you are using a version newer than new! Things are always changing here as staff experiments and automatically updates constantly.

What you need to know is that there is more than one kind of wordpress:
wordpress.COM and wordpress.ORG

We cannot use plugins on wp.com. We have no FTP access.

Here are some details:
http://en.support.wordpress.com/com-vs-org/

Which comes down to: you cannot upgrade on wp.com to use plugins. You can choose to find a host and use wp.ORG software.

Hi there,

I write a blog called The Techno Kittens (www.thetechnokittens.com). I’m having trouble trying to find plug-ins on my administrator panel and wonder if I am operating an old version of WordPress. When I signed up I did it all through wordpress so I wasn’t involved with the installation etc and bought the domain name through wordpress.

I was thinking it may be because the version of wordpress I’m using is old and needs upgrading. I’ve searched other forum posts to find out what version I’m working but I cannot seem to find the version number anywhere in my admin panel (at the bottom etc) or anywhere else for that matter.

Can anyone help me to understand how I can use plug ins and how I can check if I need to upgrade wordpress (and how if necessary!)?

Thanks so much
Leigh

You've reached support for the free sites hosted at WordPress.com. Your question is about a self-hosted installation of WordPress, available at WordPress.org.

I apologize if this seems like a silly question. However, my boss wants to switch his wordpress theme (via my insistence and assistance). However, he wants me to do it. Cool no problem, 2012 I can figure it out. I however have never run a wordpress site that wasn't a sitename.wordpress.com site.
Here are my questions:
1. Are all files installed via web or do I have to access the main frame computer?

2. Can we edit a theme from two different computer? Meaning can I link up his wordpress database to my computer. Or is this unnecessary b/c it's all installed online?

Basically, I am not 100% clear on how a wordpress site works. I know that on dreamweaver you can connect multiple computers, word offline, then upload to the site. But wordpress isn't my strong suit.

HELP! Thanks so much for your time and sorry for the silly question.

I hadn't tried that when I saw your comment, but then I did and the problems persisted. First, I tried deactivating all plugins and installing Jetpack. Same error.

Then, with the plugins still deactivated, I changed the theme do Twenty Eleven and reuploaded the plugin (downloading it from the search function doesn't seem to be working). Same error.

It's strange, because the search function doesn't seem to have any problem (I tried installing three different plugins after and they all worked). Uploading also works fine. It's just Jetpack.

The only thing I didn't know of in the Troubleshooting page of Jetpack was /xmlrpc.php. I tried accessing that and I got exactly what I should: a perfect one-lined text saying "XML-RPC server accepts POST requests only."

See? I have tried pretty much everything. The server is slow, so it's not letting me reinstall WordPress from the Dashboard, and I'm afraid of losing content if I reupload my original WordPress folder (downloaded from the website) onto the previous ones.

Is there any other alternative? Is this an isolated problem?

Thank you.

Hello. I just installed WordPress for my boyfriend's blog and we're trying to set everything up. Everything's done on the website: theme, basic plug-ins, options... Except that we cannot install Jetpack.

Every time I try to install (be it via the search function or by uploading), by the end of installation I get the "Are you sure you want to do this?" question with the only option: "Please try again."

I've tried searching for solutions online but there's nothing similar to my case.

Thank you.

I suppose my first question is this:

When I go to the self-hosting section on GoDaddy and select my package it asks me for the domain I want. But because I obviously already own the domain it tells me it isn't available.

Sooo.... Do I buy the package and then will I be given an opportunity to make it that domain name after (someone help me with how to do that!!!) or am I missing something?

THANKS!

Hi,

I have set up a straightforward wordpress.com site.
I now want to install a new theme from an external company and have worked out that I need to move to wordpress.org

Can anyone help with me instructing me on how to do this? I need to host it through someone else now? (e.g. Go Daddy) How do I do this whilst keeping the domain name I have set up through wordpress.com

Many thanks
