Credit Card Payments: WordPress.com, where we are, is not really set up for e-commerce, though you might be able to handle payments through PayPal.

Interactive calendar: We can use Google Calender embedded in a Page, but that's our only option.

Otherwise, you might want to look at using the WordPress software on a 3rd party host.

I'm researching moving the following site to WordPress: http://nhand.org/

However, I need to be sure I can add two features to the new site before I make this decision:
1. Ability to take credit card payments on the site (for dues and for the annual conference).
2. Ability to have an interactive calendar where doctors can post talks they're giving.

Please advise if you know whether this functionality is possible and how to go about doing it.

What you are describing can be done on a WordPress.org install but not on a WordPress.com free hosted blog. Read > WordPress.com vs WordPress.org

There is no upgrade you can purchase from WordPress.com that will change your blog into becoming a wiki or a forum by use of plugins. Wikis are based on the idea that the crowd, collectively, has a greater sum of knowledge than just one individual. No one person owns or rules a wiki. The wiki model is one where all members are able to add and edit material to build a knowledge base is quite different than what Discussion boards and Blogs are structured to do. Your readers can submit comments containing links to images and embeds you as Admin of your blog can approve them or not.

You can add users to your blog. See here for user roles and see here for adding users.

Thanks to the wonderful free service here, I've had the right tools to mess around and create an interactive site.

The site, Brainshart, is centered around the question, "Am I the only one...?" Users from around the world can submit things, and have them posted as soon as I make sure the post meets site standards.

Please, come take a look at it and let me know what can be improved upon! I am using WordPress, with a customization of the free theme "Suffusion". I just started allowing others to post recently, so there are only a few pages of entries so far. I would be very thankful if you went through and rated, commented, or even submitted your own Brainshart!

If it's your own video then you will have to upload it to youtube or a similar site first in order to display it on your blog. The only other alternative for displaying your own videos is to purchase the annually renewable videopress upgrade. http://en.support.wordpress.com/videopress/

I took a look at the source code for that, and it is a seriously nasty pile of code. which is why it loads so incredibly slowly. It also uses a bunch of code that is not allowed here. Quite truthfully, if that is the only way to embed an interactive Google map, I'll never be embedding one into any of my sites, or into any of my client's sites.

If Google is responsible for coming up with that code, they should be arrested.

There is no FTP access to free hosted wordpress.com blogs and we cannot upload individual plugins into our blogs here. It's the interactive part that is problematic. No you cannot use JavaScript because the software will strip it out. http://en.support.wordpress.com/code/

Well, first of the topic is a bit misleading, i know i can add Google maps to my blogs hosted on wordpress.com but my question is if what this guy has done: http://addictedtojulmust.se/julmustkartan.html is that some sort of plugin he put to his wordpress powerd blog (i.e. he has a server and just uses wordpress) or is this possible to achieve with the wordpress.com hosting also?

Since its in swedish i might have to explain what the link is showing: Its a interactive google maps map where you can select what things to see on the map. Shown here is when in sweden you can find different types of softdrinks.

I love art picture blogs. One picture says more than a 1,000 word essay.

As a whole, I would suggest limiting the page count to possibly 5 or so pages. Because with picture blogs, if you have too many pictures, people with dial-up will have a hard time navigating throughout your blog and might just leave if it takes too long to load. Too many pictures eat away at the bandwidth. I was once on a picture blog that had one MONTH worth of posts on the main page! I have high-speed and hard a hard time getting through.

The picture size is great too. Very large images might push your sidebar to the bottom of the page.
