This short post is aimed at both the job seeker and the interviewer.

The way one has handled past challenges speaks to resilience and resourcefulness - 2 qualities that employers value. This is often overlooked in interviews. Learning to highlight the lessons learned and the ongoing impact can help get one noticed -- and can help employers make better hiring decisions.

Even though I knew I was about to be put under the same tormenting observations as a fish in the aquarium, I felt my jitters instantly recede. We shook hands, Judy and I, and then she took a seat across from me. I glanced down at the long, empty table, took a deep breath, and waited to begin.

Judy explained the 401K and health benefits that the company offered, as well as verifying some of the original information we had discussed over the phone (most of which were not my best answers). This time I was ready. With lines that I had gone over twelve times on the ride in, I expanded on my work history and my understanding of the job with absolute confidence. I could tell when I gave a good answer, because Judy would look down at her notes with a little, knowing smile.

After some time, fifteen minutes or so, she stood and left. I would now meet with three team members who had the job I was applying for. At this point I was relaxed – my back, which had been flush against the gray chair
when Judy first entered, was now slouching somewhat as I leaned over the table. The team members, each warm and friendly, proceeded to ask me questions, fervently scribbling my response. With every answer I wildly flailed my arms, barely noticing I was doing it. I’ve always been a very visual speaker.

My past few posts haven’t been as hopeful – or helpful – as I had wanted them to be, so today I think I’m going to recount my first ‘real world’ interview. Hope this gives some of you a clear picture!

It was the end of June, and I was surprisingly giddy that morning; even though I had gotten up at 4:30 am to make the three hour drive to Buffalo. I may have downed two whole bottles of 5hr energy by the time I bounced onto the elevator, so I suppose being giddy explains itself. I spent the whole car ride into town going over potential questions, and my best answers. Then I begged the interview gods that I wouldn’t forget them.

But they have the natural instinct to keep trying until they’re successful. Every person has that natural instinct, but somewhere along the way life beats it out of them. The thing that you have to do is find that drive that you had as an infant.”

It’s great advice, and it does make me feel less harried about the whole job thing (which I suppose was his intention). But at the same time I’m afraid he’s too supportive.

Quite possibly. I'm sure a couple of mutual friends will remind him of what I said two years ago. I'm just bitter because I know a fellow who's starting a company with every sign of being extremely successful, and all the salaried positions have been offered to men. Men of excellent skill sets, but skill sets which are nonetheless inferior to my own. What have I been offered? The chance to liveblog their meetings once a month for $60.

No thanks. I thought we'd moved beyond being the supercompetent secretary behind the throne. Get out of my damn chair.

This is fast becoming very OT, but . . . I agree. And too often, it really is sexism, even if the person is completely clueless that that's what's going on in the back of their mind. And call me naive (or merely a wide-eyed optimist), but I'm still shocked when someone is blatantly or obviously racist or sexist & thinks I'm just going to nod and agree. Weird world we live in!

But maybe that guy who hired the other guy might think twice about basing his judgement of someone on something like their gender rather than their competence!

As long as you have that magic box selected, you're fine.

What kills me about this consultant screwing up this fellow's website is, I told the customer two years ago this would be a problem and in order to fix it would require a little bit more than simply pasting things straight in. He didn't hire me. He hired this other guy. Who then ruined his website and for 48 hours had no idea how to fix it.

Sigh. Some days it's tempting to think everyone's a sexist.

@raincoaster. I could copy my LONG bits from wordperfect (which I use for writing and work -- which is also writing! lol!) into a text editor and then copy it again back to wordpress, but I've not encountered a problem so far -- it retains certain things and not others, which I put in by hand. (This is only for certain content in certain pages, not for my regular posts, anyway, so it doesn't often arise.)

Yeppers! I'm still happy with it even though now Corel is its home. (But Corel is Canadian, and Canadians are nice, no? :))

I always have that (the correct invalidly nest html) checked. In fact, when I imported my Livejournal, LJ had a TON of errors in their LJ-generated html. I coulda done better when I was manually typing all of my html in notepad back in the early 90s. I had to go through and make insignificant changes just to have wordpress fix lj's problems. And there are still some really ugly bits of html left in posts I imported from lj.

So far, I've been very happy w/ cutting & pasting from WordPerfect, though I do go through the post after and check it each time, and have occasionally had to make tweaks in the html editor. It's usually odd spacing issues. I also code the html text formatting tags (em, strong, etc.) separately, either using wordpress's visual editor or putting in the tags manually in WordPerfect (and I've not had a problem with that, either).

Basically, checking the post as your creating it (in preview as well as html) and then proofreading it again after it's posted can avoid most problems w/ cutting & pasting from other sources, and other sorts of problems, too -- measure twice, cut once! :)

Even when something isn't copyrighted/copyrightable, it can still be plagiarized, which is also a big no-no. It's also just bad form to take the entirety of someone else's article unless they grant you permission. Reposting a snippet of it ("fair use" standard) that you found really particularly interesting, commenting on it, and linking to the original article is fine, though -- you can then talk about why you found the article so interesting.

Hello everyone!I am Eva and I have the music blog http://www.theworldlovesmusic.wordpress.com. I would like to post an interview that I found at this site -> http://www.menslounge.gr/entertainment/mousiki/sunenteuxi_locomondo.html,0 about a music band.I think of copying it and pasting it to the blog. Is this considered as copyright? Do I have to write that it comes from the specific site?
Thanks
