I use Photo Mechanic for editing IPTC data in pictures before uploading them to my site. I'm wondering why the captions I create in my Photo Mechanic 'caption' box don't appear in the WordPress 'caption' box. They show up in the 'description' box, but that's not where I want them. Any ideas?

Quick update: the lightroom plugin authors have mentioned that the "wpid" prefix in front of the filenames are put automatically by WP.com and they have no control - so this seems squarely as a WP.com issue.

Hoping for a workaround and not having to revert back to Picasaweb/G+.

I was planning to move my family photos from Picasaweb to WordPress but am having difficulty with the way WP.com handles media import.

When importing photos manually via the uploader on the post/site, IPTC captions on the photo (entered via Picasa or Lightroom software) end up as the "Title" of the image, with the "Caption" of the image left blank.

When importing photos automatically via the XMLRPC interface using Lightroom plugins, the "Title" of the image gets populated with the filename prefixed using "wpid" e.g. wpid-img1000.jpg and the "Caption" field remains empty, even though the image still contains the correct IPTC/EXIF metadata.

This behavior is inconsistent and makes the gallery carousel view unfriendly with cryptic file names instead of all showing the friendly IPTC captions I have spent countless hours updating via cataloging sotware.

Any thoughts on how the IPTC captions issues can be worked around?
Thanks

I wish to upload regular images to a newer blog page which are up for sale elsewhere. The preservation of an image's IPTC metadata (its copyright status and source) is therefore important to me because I want to minimise its likelihood of becoming orphaned.

I notice that once uploaded, WordPress (just as Google currently do) are stripping out all the metadata tagged to the file and my picture is therefore without ownership or copyright status. This is something the picture industry is trying to rectify so that photography on the net is still married to its author and/or owner.

So I was wondering if WordPress have a way of avoiding losing IPTC metadata or even of stopping this issue?

Many thanks,

Richard.
