Again, this is how Forums are supposed to work. Ask a question, get a straightforward, intelligent answer. Thank you, Mark.

And thank you, also, raincoaster, timethief, sulz and sunburntkamel, for weighing in.

Can I just recommend, Mark, that this simple advice be added to the Tag page? [http://wordpress.com/tags/]

It's a simple enough procedure, but not something I thought about doing until you showed me the way.

raincoaster, you're exactly right. If the tag is there, clicking does exactly that. But if you want to surf for, I don't know, "santa claus", how do you find a post that's already tagged for "santa claus" without cleaning out your entire Tag Surfer list first?

Sulz, I don't have trouble surfing for more than one tag, either. I routinely search for about 10. The trouble comes when you try to deactivate 9 of those 10 and surf for only 1. The 9 don't just deactivate and stay in the list unchecked. They disappear.

All you have to do is click on the tag on a post and it takes you to the WordPress-wide search for that tag. If you click on it in your sidebar you get only a that-blog-specific search for that tag.

sunburntkamel is exactly right. If you do know the exact name of a tag you want to navigate to, it's not difficult to update your address line like so:

http://wordpress.com/tag/flash-fiction or
http://wordpress.com/tag/299-words

to name just two of my admittedly self-serving favorites. Even if Flash Fiction doesn't show up in the weighted Tags list for the most popular tags of the day, you can always get there in one step with this technique. (Don't forget to substitute hyphens for word spaces, as in the examples, if you're looking for a multi-word tag.)

Still, wouldn't it be neat to have a search function that, as he mentions, might offer suggestions as you type?

yes, this would be an excellent addition. i know you can manually type the URL of the tag you want to see, but that's not fun.

it would be great if tag search worked like adding tags to posts, where you could see suggested tags as you type.

Tags are great. Tag Surfer is terrific.

How about Tag Search, to quickly deliver posts that share just one tag not popular enough to show up in the Home tag list.

I know it's possible to Tag Surf for just one tag, but that requires deactivating all the other tags. They disappear when you do that, which is most inconvenient.
