Are there _any_ workarounds? Is there truly no way for me to import them as a XML file (or ten, or a hundred and twenty)?

We can't import their export files at this time. We can only use their API for a direct import, which is notoriously flaky lately.

At this point, I recommend that you just keep trying. It will work eventually.

I want to switch over to WordPress fully but an inability to copy over the archives makes me reluctant.

Unfortunately, it doesn't help. I'm having exceptional difficulties: didn't the old Livejournal importer accept month-by-month XML files?

Does this help http://en.support.wordpress.com/import/ If not, flag this for staff by putting the tag "modlook" in the tag box and they can help you.

Hi!

Since 2002 I've maintained a Livejournal at rfmcdpei.livejournal.com, but as that service withers on the vine and becomes more problematic I'd like to export my decade's worth of archived posts from there to my WordPress blog, located at abitmoredetail.wordpress.com.

Is there any way I can do that? Whenever I try to import my blog via Dashboard -> Tools -> Import, I keep encountering failure as the Livejournal API never seems to work for me. I can export the blog as XML files, month by month, and I'm making a backup even as I type via my Semagic client, but how can I import this?

I want to import posts from my LiveJournal blog but do not want these imported posts to show up as entries in my RSS feed. I'm afraid doing that will flood my friends' RSS pages, otherwise.

Is there any way to do this?

I no longer have specifics, as I have now copied/pasted them into WordPress.

It seems they were mainly older dated posts, and possibly posts with the same date as another that did import.

Brand new to WordPress, and was delighted to find I could import from LiveJournal.

However, it does not bring all posts. Later years are missing altogether.

I've had to recreate, and all is well, but am sharing for the benefit of the masses.

"i" is sort of going the same way and being replaced by "em" tags.

There are all sorts of discussions about b vs strong and i vs em and the purists say that both are needed and both should be used with em and strong being used for emphasis and b and i for just differentiating things, like the title of a book, or a lower level subheadings, etc.

I can see the purist's arguments, but then that is one more thing I have to think about when I'm writing posts. Do I use b here or strong, i or em?

You were using the "b" tag for bold and everyone is starting to move away from that and to "strong" tags. The reason the "b" tags aren't producing bold text is because there is not styling rule in the CSS for the "b" tags.

You will have to edit the posts and replace all "b" tags with "strong" tags. Styling could be added to the CSS for the "b" tags if you had the Custom Design Upgrade, but $30 just to at a rule for "b" tags would be a little much.

I'll tag this thread for staff attention and to have it moved to the themes forum and perhaps staff will add that to the original CSS for the theme.

Well, for example, in this post here all of the plain text is supposed to be bolded. The HTML for the italic formatting is working fine, as you can see. And if I go to edit the post, all the correct words are in bold.

This is an... odd issue. A couple months ago I imported all the entries from my Livejournal to WordPress. I've noticed now that any bold HTML used in my LJ entries isn't showing in those posts, though if I go to edit the post the proper words are bolded in the edit window and if I update the post, the bold characters show. Any other HTML in the LJ posts (like italics) is showing just fine - it's only anything in bold that isn't.

Anyone know of a way to fix this without manually going through every entry and resaving or reformatting?

SIGH! OK fine.
i'll try that.
Now please tell me why this was not highlighted in the import process instructions?? Why did WordPress not inform potential users that this could happen if their images are linked to their previous blogs??
Disappointed in WordPress does not even begin to describe how i feel now...
i will be posting about this on my blog now.

There is really no way to rectify the situation. If the images didn't come over, and you allowed your Livejournal account to expire, they're definitely gone.

Even if we could get a way to import the images, the originals left when you allowed your Livejournal account to expire.

At this point, your best bet is to contact Livejournal to see if they can temporarily restore your account or at least give you the images.

My account has expired - i no longer have access to them.
i allowed my Livejournal account to expired because i trusted the import process provided by WordPress was complete. As i said before, there is nothing in your import process instructions which recommended or highlighted the fact that images may have to be re-uploaded. Besides the point, 250 posts with images is alot to expect someone to re-upload manually especially if the post are some 6 yrs old. Your import instructions should be more complete or else your import process needs to be better.
So does this mean that those 250 posts are doomed to be meaningless? Images are important to most of my posts.
i'm very disappointed with WordPress now... i put in a fair amount of effort in selecting WordPress to move my blog to & now this happens!!
Please rectify this ASAP - suggest a workable solution!!

Are the photos still on your LiveJournal blog, or did you delete them after importing?

Dear macmanx,
so is there a solution now?
Or am i doomed to having a blog with 250posts which don't make much sense without their photos?? As i said previously, many of the images were lost in my HD crash & the ones posted on the blog were the only copies.
My next question is why was this not advised or even mentioned in your import process?? If it had been, i would have manually imported the photos or at least re-saved them off my previous blog. That's just a great mis-information on the part of WordPress, which claims to be very professional. Not informing your users of such a problem is completely unprofessional.
Please rectify immediately so that no one else would suffer as i did...

For the most part, we don't modify image URLs when importing from third-party sources, since there's really no way to distinguish between images that were part of your original site vs. images that were embedded from elsewhere (like Flickr, Instagram, etc).

The images exist only on my previous blog. Not on any 3rd party website.
i just rechecked the links for the images - they are still linked to pics.livejournal.com
My question is - shouldn't they have been moved to the WordPress gallery for my new blog when i did the import?
Again i repeat - there was no instruction to re-link during import.

Are the images that are missing hosted on third party image hosting sites like Flickr, Photobucket, etc.?
Are the images that are missing ones you linked to on other sites on the interent?
