I'm trying to install wordpress on my MAMP server. When I edit wp-config.php with these settings:

// ** MySQL settings - You can get this info from your web host ** //
/** The name of the database for WordPress */
define('DB_NAME', 'wordpress');

/** MySQL database username */
define('DB_USER', 'root');

/** MySQL database password */
define('DB_PASSWORD', 'root');

/** MySQL hostname */
define('DB_HOST', 'localhost');

It returns this error message:

Error establishing a database connection
This either means that the username and password information in your wp-config.php file is incorrect or we can't contact the database server at localhost. This could mean your host's database server is down.

I've looked at numerous forums that state over and over again that these are the settings to be used but for some reason they won't work for me. I know my server works because I can load other .php pages through it. Please help!

I am developing my website usibg WP on my local host for uploading later using MAMP. The other day for no apparent reason my WordPress site has developed a glitch? I can write pages and publish them. But only the page heading publishes - the content on the page doesn’t publish. The new pages that I write don’t show any content (even though there is content in the control panel). They also do not have the black control strip at the top for some reason?

I can add content to the original pages that I have written?

Has anyone any suggestions or views on this? I am using MAMP and the MySQL and APACHE SERVERS show a green light so they should be working ok? Could it be a database issue – or is it something more obvious?

If it helps - I'm using a template called Purity.

Thanks guys.

I'm using MAMP on my macbook to develop my site locally first. Everything is installed and correct, except the issue I'm having is the screen resolution while editing wordpress is larger than usual? even the log-in page displays large. Is this a settings issue with MAMP or is it my MAC? at first i was using XAMPP and the display/ resolution was fine, then after editing a few pages, the res. suddenly became large. thus the switch to mamp to see if that would repair, sure enough it didn't. Any thoughts??
