Setting aside blogger created awards memes, there are also "sponsored" blog memes like Blogger's Choice Awards and in those cases a commercial site sponsoring the meme requires bloggers to enter nominations and votes on their site. That amounts to great traffic for them as the sponsoring sites are all monetized sites and most are PPC (pay per click) sites. A typical example of such a meme is one wherein one can nominate their own blog in a specific category on the sponsored site, and then vote for it every day on the sponsored site, and get all their friends to vote for it too.

Superficially they are a means of locating blogs to read you would not have otherwise located and making new blogging "friends". But the actual purpose underlying any award meme is to accrue backlinks.

Links are the currency of the blogopsphere. Backlinks to your blog and posts are an indication of popularity and a factor when it comes to earning page rank. All awards memes involve a badge of some sort and a list of things to publish about in a post of your own. All awards memes require "nominating" other blogs ie. sending them backlinks when you publish the required post. The overall function is similar to a chain letter function.

My advice is not to take any of these memes seriously.

A blog meme (blog award) is a viral game where you generate links and relationships through asking other bloggers to participate. There are no WordPress.com sponsored blog awards memes and this is not a WordPress.com support issue per say.

If you are "nominated" and you want to play the chain letter styled blog award meme game then you go to the site of the person who presented you with the award and follow the instructions they posted.

Natural backlinking patterns to authoratative posts in related blogs in posts on your own blog are what Google is focused on. These awards memes are the opposite of natural linking patterns, which is why I don't participate in any of them.

That does sound odd but it's my experience that most bloggers presenting awards to other bloggers sincerely want to recognize the blogs they link to. As attrecting traffic and securing comments has become a formidable undertaking these days many have resorted to securing backlinks vis memes like blog awards and blog contaests, etc.

It's likewise important to know that the sponsoring of a meme, blog award, blog contest by any company brings them lots of hits and they operate on ppc (pay for click) sites. The voting takes place on those company sites and no matter how many time I have explained this in greater detail than I am doing now some bloggers just don't get it. Google has filters that favor natural linking patterns.

Just an aside here - when I was writing a general blog, I found that doing posts about spam - and even talking about it in comments - brought more to my blog - mostly because they pick up on it via search engines. So if you get much more after your current post, this might be why.

And a tip to lessen the spam, if there are any specific words or phrases that you see over and over again that appear in the comments (and which aren't likely to appear in real people's comments) you can blacklist them:

No this is not affiliated with WordPress.com. A blog meme is a viral game where you generate links and relationships through asking other bloggers to participate. There are many blog awards and all are memes designed to get backlinks under the guise of blog awards.

I have two questions I hope you can answer:
1. Recently, my blog has been inundated with spammers. The URLs of some of them is quite graphic, and when I hover the mouse over the name, the photo is pornographic. Akismet has been excellent in filtering out this spam. But I wonder if anything can be done to eliminate it. I now spend more time cleaning out the junk mail than I do in creating my blog. (I just wrote a blog about this: "Spam, Spam, Spam, Spam.")
2. This week, I was awarded the "Illuminating Blogger Award." I can't find any info on it. Is this affiliated with WordPress?
Thank you.
