To eliminate the top menu you need to create a custom menu, add no items to it, and select that menu from the "Primary Navigation" pulldown.

I am using the Yoko theme, and I just want to use the sub-menu, but leave the main navigation empty, so that in effect the only menu items you see are below the header image.
In menu settings i have set main nav to blank, but it is still showing pages (not categories though) in the main nav at the top of the page.
I think i came across this in the modularity lite theme as well
anyone any ideas?
