Unfortunately it is not actually possible to recycle usernames within our system. Once a username has been used, even if it is discarded or "deleted," it remains in our database so that someone else does not assume that user's identity later on. We put this warning a couple of times on the help page about changing usernames:

At this point I do recommend that you transfer your sites from the user codemaster2cp to the user nightpool.

This can be done easily through the My Blogs menu within your Dashboard, and we have a help article which walks you through the process:

We do not delete account names, but we do keep them in the database. Normally, we don't ever recycle usernames, so that no one can ever obtain a username that a different user once owned.

Since you once owned the nightpool name, I was able to allow you to access that account again.

I used to have two accounts. One was from a long time ago, and one that was slightly more recent. Neither of which I used, tbh. But when the Gravatar merge happened, it merged with my older (codemaster2cp) account. So I transferred all my blogs and adminships to this account and changed the username on the old one to nightpoolold. I would now like to change the username on codemaster2cp to nightpool, as it is the username I use everywhere else.

I would prefer everything to be consolidated under this account, and the only thing remaining is the username. Is it possible for you to free up this old, not in use anymore name?

Provided you are logged in under the username account that registered the blog then, Site titles (Blog Names) and Taglines located here > Settings > General can easily be changed at any time.

Hover your mouse on the blog address and there will be "Change blog address"

When you say blog's name, do you mean the site title? Because if it is, you can just go to your dashboard > settings > general

And then you can edit it there.

I've been trying for quite a while now to change my blog's name. I know that there is a page in the support section that gives detailed and easy-to-understand instructions on this, but I can't find the dashboard it's trying to get me to use for step 1. The article stresses that this is a different dashboard than the one I can easily access, but for the life of me I can't find it.

Is there any way I can get access to this other dashboard? Where do I find it? I can't even find the little house icon that is shown in all the pictures on the support page (I'm assuming the pictures are up to date). Please help!

The title doesn't have to be the actual filename: WP automatically fills in the title attribute with the filename when you fail to provide a title yourself.
You can edit your posts, switch the editor to Text (HTML) and type more appropriate titles. Changing the titles in the Media Library won't change the versions you have inserted in the posts.
For future posts, make sure you type your own titles when uploading/inserting imges (or give better names to the image files themselves before uploading them, as raincoaster sugested).

I am having a problem with the names of my images, when my mouse hovers over an image on my live site a little yellow box appears with the name of the photo. I have not named my images very cleverly and don't want this seen, is there a way of turning it off...

Or more importantly would it be bad to turn it off for search reasons and should I rename all my images in a better way? If this is the case is it ok to do this in the media section, and go through one by one changing the title - or will this destroy any links that photo has to the website?

Been a bit confused lately about getting a domain name. And it starts like this.

1. I love wordpress.com and I started blogging on it since 2006. Lately, I been tumbling a bit more on tumblr than blogging on wp.com. I was thinking of getting a domain name from godaddy.com and have it on tumblr. US$7.99 I can have my own customize domain name and a bit of css customization (although I do not know coding very well) but after much thoughts I decided to get a self-hosted blog with wp. Simply because I missed commenting. tumblr's audience reblogs more in my opinion

2. my blog leetucksing.wordpress.com started out as a personal blog. I blog about my school work, my internship experience, my triathlon training and my travel. In 2008 I started getting into the world of startups and I begin blogging my startup experience till now.

Now I finally decided to move over to wp.org but what should I name my new blog? I want it to have an angle where I blog about my startup experiences in Asia. Should I use my own name still like.. ahleein.asia or would you suggest me getting a different blog name? like ahleebuildsa.com?

Also would you recommend me to import all my posts over to the new blog or start a fresh?
