To change the main column width, you would want to change the container width as well. Here is an example:

#page {
	width: 1160px;
}

#content {
	max-width: 870px
}

Adjust the numbers to the widths you'd like to use.

If you change the main column width in CSS, it's also a good idea to change the limit width setting in the Appearance → Custom Design → CSS settings as well.

How do I widen my post section? Changing #content Max-width can narrow it but not wider than how it is...
There is invisible blockage.

Adjusting #page works for the overall width, but not for the separate columns. My main reason for asking is to try to make sure all of the questions in the CSS forums have answers posted. :)

I noticed something else that might help you. If you are new to CSS, the best way to make updates is to select the "Add my CSS" option on the Appearance → Custom Design → CSS page and then just add in small CSS snippets for changes you want to make that are different from the original stylesheet. You would just want to use the original stylesheet as a reference and not copy and paste the entire thing into the CSS editor.

I changed the width of the entire blog to be wider. Now I want to make the right sidebar area narrower. How??

Nice idea!!

Zooming in and out of the page does generate very odd results for that field in the database. If I zoom in (from the base setting i.e. from zero zoom) then the column increases in chracter width but loses some of the information contained in the field. Zooming in reduces the character width but retains the information. Definitely a bug!

Certain this was no compliant with standards I checked the html through the W3C validator. It has 6 errors on it!

There's a more serious problem I've discovered and that is to do with security: If two windows are open in FF 9.0.1, logging out of WP in one window doesn't log the user out from the system. The user stays logged in via the other window.!! Anyway that's off-topic but fwiw to anyone coming here. Beware!

p.s Btw zooming in/out can be easily controlled in FF simply by using CTRL and scrolling. Reset is CTRL 0. Scrolling doesn''t change the display it only scales it. The result you might be imagining is the sort of thing that happens on handheld devices as theior browsers tend not to be standards compliant.

The display is the same as last night when I set up the account so the machine has been switched off and on a couiple of times since then. I did clear the cache at the time though as a first stop and it made no difference.

One other question, is all the styling gone and it is just a plain white background?

That is strange. Try this: Log out, clear the browser cache and cookies, restart the browser and then take another look and see if that fixed it.

Can't see a way to upload a screenshot here but I'll try and describe what the dashboard looks like in FF 9.0.1 (Win 7):

Generally, the page looks fine excpet for the "Title" colum. At present the only Post is the Hello World one. As the Tirle column is only appx 4 characters wide, this appears as:

With only the one post this is not a problem, even though it is irritating. But with even two or three posts the dashboard will become quite hard to use.

Is this a know bug, or is there something that I can do about it?

I would suggest contacting staff on this and see if they will fix it. I messed with the CSS a little and can fix it by widening the submenu tabs, but this really isn't something you should have to do.

Basically it is set up for shorter labels than what you are using.

If you look at your CSS you will find

min-height:355px;
...
}

Change the height to the desired value, e.g.
min height: 200px;

Hang on there. It just occurred to me. What exactly did you mean by 2x2? Is it 2 pictures followed immediately by another 2 pictures that ISN'T divided by a gap? Sort of like 4 squares inside a bigger square? How do you do that? I'm currently using irfanView's 'Create Panaroma Image' to make those 1x5 images.

Or did you just mean 1x2 on the first line followed by another 1x2? There would be a line between these pictures, which I would prefer not to have.

That's exactly the point: I don't think having to scroll to see groups of pics is user-friendly when these pics can easily be arranged in a way that involves no scrolling.

Well I guess professional isn't the word. I just wanted something more 'user-friendly' and involves the reader to scroll and be engaged with the blog :O

Hmm at 440 I'd definitely need to make it 2x2 instead of 1x4 or 1x5 (as in some of the images I have).

(440 is the maximum allowed in Contempt)

But I don't think that idea is "professional". Instead, I would suggest thumbnails linking to full-size originals when clicked.

Hey guys, my blog is http://themarchingjester.wordpress.com/ and I'm using the Andreas09 theme.

Lately I've been practicing the use of the programme GIMP and I've decided to add a nice image header on my home page. Andreas09 does not allow it.

I've found that I really like the Contempt theme. Problem is, it's really narrow.

On my blog, I've many pictures that are 800px x 132px - mostly pictures of my dog and wife.

When I previewed the blog with the Contempt theme, the images are unfortunately halved.

Is there a way I could still use the Contempt theme, stick to my 800 x 132 images but have some sort of scrolling bar below each image? So readers can scroll the image from left to right and look at the entire image, instead of half. Okay that was a 'duh' sentence, but you guys get what I mean.

So is it possible? Just curious as I'm trying to create a more 'professional' look for my family blog.
