Good thing this renaming to lowercase is simple to automate.

The thing is, the web does not like uppercase in URLs and file names, and even if you put uppercase into a URL, your browser will change it all to lowercase. Same with email addresses. What is used and sent back and forth are lowercase even if you put uppercase into your email address. Some email programs will display the uppercase, but as far as the backend workings, no uppercase is used.

All you have to do change the image file name to lowercase from within the desktop/finder and then things should be fine. Even if wordpress did let you upload with uppercase in the file name, they would convert it to lowercase when they saved it on their servers because, again, the web does not like upper case in file names or URLs.

Now this is weird... in the meantime I double-checked the effect and found that the WP uploader's ability to display JPG files depends partly on upper-/lowercase extensions and partly on the OS environment:

With the latest Firefox and similar addons on three different machines, Mac OS and a natively-running Ubuntu display all Nikon View JPGs, while the same Ubuntu version within a Parallels virtualizer only displays lowercase JPGs.

Ah, thanks for the quick reply. Nikon View actually does put the extension on the name but in uppercase. And I haven't found a way of specifying which case to use. Hm, maybe I'll need to script the renaming process.

I've never had good luck with the Nikon View software, and a friend of mine said that there is something they do in the file itself that is not completely kosher, so anything that sticks completely to the JPEG standards will have issues.

Also, make sure that the Nikon software is actually putting the 3 letter extension on the file name ( .jpg ). Make sure the file name and extension is all in lowercase letters, and make sure the file name does not contain anything but letters, numbers, dashes ( - ) and the underscore character ( _ ) . No special characters such as & # @ ^ % etc.

Hello,
in the last few days I find that I can't upload JPEG files saved from raw images in Nikon View software to wp any more, no matter which export setting I apply, and using View NX as well as NX2. Those files are simply invisible for the upload software. Opening the JPEG file in the MacOS Preview app and saving unmodified does the trick, but it's a rather clumsy workaround.

Does anyone have an idea how to directly upload Nikon View files again?
