Ah, I may have just answered a small part of it. I noticed the the first bit of the code:

 < a h r e f = " h t t p : // www. amazon.co.uk/gp/product/1401238556/ref=as_li_ss_tl?ie=UTF8&camp=1634&creative=19450&creativeASIN=1401238556&linkCode=as2&tag=patmillswordp-21">Marshal Law: The Deluxe Edition HC

actually converted to a hyperlink to the amazon page in question, so is that the bit of code you say I should use, and discard the rest?

And therefore....I make the rest of the widget by adding a picture of the book..? But what is the code for that? Sorry, thinking this up as I go along....

Hi raincoaster,

Sorry but I went to do it and realised I haven't got a clue. Here's the text only link from the amazon affiliates page:

Marshal Law: The Deluxe Edition HC<img src="http://www.assoc-amazon.co.uk/e/ir?t=patmillswordp-21&l=as2&o=2&a=1401238556" width="1" height="1" border="0" alt="" style="border:none !important; margin:0px !important;" />

Which bit of this code is acceptable to WordPress?

When you say to design the widget first, where do you do that? Are you referring to creating a new blog post?

If so, when I'm in the visual editor, how do I design the widget?

Apologies for being so ill-informed!

The thing is, the Amazon widget code is insecure and will be stripped out. There is no way it can be used here because of the code it uses. You can, however, promote and sell your own book in a widget, you just need a different code.

ALL of their widget code will be stripped out, so you will have tow rite your own widget. You can do this easily in a text widget, it just takes a bit of fiddling. I create my text widgets in the Visual editor, so I can use the formatting tools, then I click over to the Text widget to add any affiliate codes, then I copy the entire code and paste that into my text widget. It is a system that works well.

Now, the code you need is a simple text link to your book on Amazon. In the affiliate link builder, you want Link To Any Page and put in the title of your book and it will find it. That's the link code you need. It's perfectly secure and will not be stripped out by WordPress. You can use it in text or link an image of your book or both.

is confusing me: if I can't add the Amazon widget, how else would I do as you state, and link to my book?

I'm afraid I'm not technically savvy enough to do it any other way than by copying the Amazon affiliate text and pasting it into a text widget. Is there another way?

Okay - I understand that I cannot add the widget.

No you cannot add the widget. There are code restrictions on free hosted WordPress.com blogs. However, the only exception to the no affiliate links policy does apply in your case. Types of blogs that are not welcome:

Affiliate marketing blogs: Blogs with the primary purpose of driving traffic to affiliate programs and get-rich-quick schemes (“Make six figures from home!!”, “20 easy steps to top profits!!”, etc). This includes multi-level marketing (MLM) blogs and pyramid schemes. To be clear, people writing their own original book, movie or game reviews and linking them to Amazon, or people linking to their own products on Etsy do NOT fall into this category. Here is a thread in the support forums that talks more about which affiliate links are OK or not OK. http://en.wordpress.com/types-of-blogs/

Hello, I managed to send a message to WordPress support about a week ago, but I don't seem to be able to find the link any more.

My blog is https://patmills.wordpress.com/ and I am a writer. I have a new book (Marshal Law, by Pat Mills and Kevin O'Neill) from DC Comics, and I would like to put an Amazon widget on my sidebar, to promote my book, so that readers can click through and buy my book if they want. I didn't realise at the time that it wasn't allowed, so I tried several times to paste the text into the text widget, and I couldn't understand why it kept disappearing!

So I did some searching and found the reason on the forums.

But I gather that the restriction is to stop people abusing the system. I *think* I would be allowed to add the Amazon widget, as I am the author, and it will be the only thing I am promoting.

How do I ask WordPress to consider my case and allow me to add the widget?

Many thanks,

Pat

Step 2: Login to your WordPress dashboard.

Step 4: Under the "Available Widgets" section, find the Text widget and drag it into one of your widget areas on the right-hand side of the page.

Step 5: Ignore the "Title" input field, and paste everything from Step 1 into the main text area.

Step 6: Hit Save.

I'm sorry but that cannot be used on a free hosted WordPress>COM blog. It's for WordPress>ORG installs. Please read this comparison > http://support.wordpress.com/com-vs-org/

First... I'm not a paid subscriber. Being a student surviving basically on student loans and about $500 a month, I simply can't afford it. I just have a free blog, and that's it.

I just got a Vine account, and I'd like to put a widget to that account in my sidebar. I did manage to find a Vines widget here, but I have no frickin' clue how to install it. I was hoping for just some code to copy/paste into the Text widget, because that's how I installed an Instagram widget.

But this is a .zip fil that has a whole ton of directions that may as well be written in Martian for all I can understand it.

Please help.

This is what we can do > http://en.support.wordpress.com/images/instagram/
We cannot use Javacript widgets or iframes on free hosted WordPress.com blogs. As they are a security and stability risk on this multiuser blogging platform the software strips the code out.
Every time I post the code in the Text widget and click save, it deletes the content I just pasted. I have tried it on different computers, different browsers, and different days.
