Hello there,
Your post here is off-topic for this thread but I'll answer it anyway. Yes, you can pruchase a domain mapping upgrade and still have your blog free hosted here at WordPress.com. I have two blogs that are hosted here on their own domains with domain mapping upgrades.
http://en.support.wordpress.com/domain-mapping/

Yes you cav set a static front page if you wish and compel all returning visitors to have to click through it to find what they came for ie. to ready your most recent post. However if you aren't aware of the SEO implications of doing that please read Better Blogging at WordPress.com: Pages and Posts

There is only one main page for posts in a blog and all posts will show on the main (blog) page ie> running page for posts. If you do not want all the posts to show on the main page, then you can create a static front page for your site and also create a “blog” page. After you create them you go here > Settings > Reading and make the designation change and click “save changes”. http://en.support.wordpress.com/pages/front-page/

Posts and Pages are different. There is only one running page for posts in a blog and the themes I provided a link to above provide an option for full width display (no sidebar option) on selected pages. So "yes" you can use one of them the way you indicate and have widgets on the running page for posts only.

I want to keep the widgets on my blog page though. I like my current theme, but if I were to switch to one on the page that you suggest, can I still add them back specifically on my blog page and not on the static pages on my site? (eg About, My Research....and future pages I have in mind to add).

First you need to create and load a custom menu in place of the default menu of the theme. Instructions here:
http://en.support.wordpress.com/menus/
(By the way, if you used a custom menu from the start, you could have created the dropdowns without having to turn those pages into child pages.)

For the non-linking tab, you'll need to add a custom link to the menu instead of your About page. see here:
http://en.forums.wordpress.com/topic/category-drop-down-menu?replies=6#post-478269

I created an ‘About’ page as a parent page and 3 other pages as sub-categories. Is there a way to make the ‘About’ page just a title (because I don’t want to enter any info on this page) where you cannot click on it?

Ah, then it can be done quite easily.

Create a page to be used as your main page. In the "attributes" module in the page editor, select "full-width" from the page template pulldown and publish the page.

If you do not want comments enabled, on your pages, go to settings > discussion and turn off comments and trackbacks and save. On existing published pages, you will have to turn them off individually. You can do that by going to pages > all pages and use the quick edit feature and turn comments off quickly on the other pages.

Now go to settings > reading and set that page you created as your static home page (no need to select a "posts" page) and save.

Visit your site and you will see that your main page now has no sidebar. Do that with the rest of your pages as well (select full-width in the attributes module in the page editor).
