Use excerpts and/or limit the number of posts on front page
Your blog’s load time will increase in accord with the number of posts you display on your main page. To reduce blog loading time use the “read more” tag in your posts and display only excerpts there, and/or reduce the number of posts on your front page.
1. reduce the number of posts appearing on your front page here > Settings > Reading
2. split content by using the more tag or other means of splitting content
3. optimize and presize all images to fit into the blogging space and/or sidebar space in your theme prior to uploading them
reduce the size of images, the number of media embeds, and the number of widgets running script in your sidebar

@indepreneur - I just had a look at your blog and it's loading fine for me, which is actually unusual as, although I have broadband, I'm out in the sticks and my 'net connection is usually slow!

Sometimes a lot of images and videos do slow down loading time.

Have you tried clearing your cache? That sometimes helps.

No, you can't use plugins with WordPress.com.

I'd think that if it's been a problem for a while, then it's probably something to do with your computer, but if it's new maybe it's WordPress being a bit glitchy. Wait a bit and see if someone else responds to your question, someone else might have some ideas.

Thanks, I'm guessing it is probably all the pics and videos. Though I haven't ever experienced such lag viewing other blogs with similar or even more multimedia content.

My PC is pretty old but it has a 3.20 Ghz processor and 2 gigs of RAM and we pay for the premium Broadband service. My greatest disadvantage is the outdated integrated display adapter. I expect 3d Games to lag a lot but not web pages. :(

Did you check it out to see if it lagged for you at all? I'm wondering if maybe it has something to do with the extra steps it has to go through because it is not self-hosted in it's own domain. It's like shared-hosting within shared hosting right?

I searched and only found one post about this and it wasn't a wordpress hosted blog. I have extremely slow loading pages. I know how to optimize a self-hosted WP blog but have no clue as to how to do so with a WordPress hosted one. I'm guessing the answer will be to opt in to a paid wordpress hosting accnt. :P Or are there any free plugins that will work with free wordpress hosted blogs to say compress the database or something like that? Thanks for providing this support here.

Doc Savage
Oh just had a thought. Maybe it is just me that it is loading slowly for. Anyone can confirm? Thanks. :D

The dark/black wordpress bar that appears at the top of every page really interferes with viewing pages, and it wastes a lot of space since it's blank across most of the bar. It badly needs some tweaks to optimize it's usefulness and eliminate some problems.

When reading pages, if you use a page down command (e.g., hitting the space bar), the first sentence or two of the next page is buried under the wordpress bar -- forcing you to have to manually scroll to see those sentences. This is a distraction, and an irritating waste of time, especially if you read a lot and especially if you happen to read a lot on sites where the article or comments run for multiple full screens.

For users with small screen, such as typical laptops, that vertical space is prescious. As configured, the wordpress horizontal bar just wastes more of that space, when it's not even used that often relative to the amount of time the user spends reading various webpages.

Some sites neatly handle these problems by including a control icon on the bar that allows you to toggle between seeing the bar and eliminating all but the control button/icon. For example, see: http://www.cnet.com/ Their bar is at the bottom of the page with a control tab/button/icon to the right to close the bar, to the left to reopen it (personally I think it's more intuitive if the icon stays in the same place, ideally to the far right or left of the page, rather than moving). Or see: http://www.cbsnews.com/ which isn't the best example since their bar doesn't toggle, it just allows you to get rid of it entirely (bottom of page, control icon to the right). I've run across other extremely well known/heavily used sites with bar across the top or bottom that toggles, but don't recall exactly where offhand.

The bar space could also be far more useful and take a little less time to use if some of the options were spread across it in the blank area, rather than being drop down menus from items that are only on the leftmost and right most sides of the pages. Why waste all that blank space, when our most commonly used options could be directly accessible in it instead, with only one user action required instead of three (access drop down, move to selection, click selection)?

a couple things i have learned:
1. find a few "Categories" that best fit the subject of you blog.
If you use these categories with your posts, generally you will build a higher rating with engines over a shorter time.

2.Have a categories or tags like "life" or "health" are fine. However a million other blogs use these, and its tough for a new blog to compete. So i use categories that are not as universal, also.

3. make sure you fill out the descriptions if your using pictures!
do not underestimate the power of image search engines to bring traffic to your blog.

I understand why most images need to be optimized, but the fact remains that optimizing utterly destroys the color and contrast of images--the results are flat, washed out photos. I have already optimized my images EXACTLY how I want them (small files, correct color and contrast) in photoshop, so there is no need for your site to do it again when I upload them. Can I upload my images without your optimizer destroying them?

Also, I seem to be able to only upload one photo per post. Is there any way I can upload several images in one post? Thanks

Photoshop / Paint Shop Pro and similar programs will do it, but there is no need to spend money. The following programs can be downloaded free of charge from the internet:

Irfanview
Picasa
GIMP
Pixia

Here are two others that blogging friends of mine use use:
PIXresizer - The reduced files are saved in a different folder, so your original images are not altered at all. PIXresizer offers several different resizing methods to choose from and can automatically recognize image sizes to calculate the best fit. In addition, it can convert between image formats (JPEG, GIF, BMP, PNG and TIFF), rotate images, convert to grayscale and resize multiple images in batch mode. A great companion for webmasters and digital photographers.

Free batch photo resizer - * The tool is using high-quality resizing method, where color of each pixel is a weighted average of all covered pixels from the original image. Linear interpolation is used when zooming in.
* The algorithm is optimized to work with gamma-corrected pictures.
* High speed.

@artidkc
I always shoot at the absolute highest resolution and then downsize them as needed for the web. That way the original is always there at the highest resolution. The online solution sanjidabd and the picasa program tjukkie mentioned are both good.

You might also consult your owner's manual for the setting at which you're shooting. It sounds as if you're on a high-res setting, which is overkill for online use.

You might like to use Picasa from Google. It's also handy in combination with your new camera, besides resizing your images. Download it here: http://picasa.google.com/download/

the above link contains info on online and offline programs that get the job done.

i haven't tested the offline programs myself, and so i can't offer a tutorial.

but the online programs are really easy. nothing much to teach, really!

all the best!

I've posted four images from my own pic files but they're 3 MB each. They are from a new digital camera. I realized my other pics are only a few hundred KB. How can I decrease these pics size? I know I need to 'optimize' my images, but I don't have a clue how. Could somebody teach me the simplest way?
