Posts can be retrieved by category so that means that you can create a custom menu for your categories. So even though all your posts go to your main page (which does not have to have a menu access if you prefer not) you can use the custom menu function to display each of your chosen categories.

Different themes handle these category groupings (pages) differently, some show only excerpts, others will show the complete post.

See this on creating custom menus (it discusses the category pages too)

I'm trying to set up my blog so that I can make individual pages for different topics and then add posts to those pages.

Basically, I'm doing written let's plays for games and I want them organized by game. For example, I want to make a page for "Nuzlocke Challenges" (A type of self imposed challenge for pokemon games), then under that I want a sub-page for "Pokemon Diamond", and I want to add posts about my experiences in that game to that page instead of to my main page.

I feel it would keep things really neat and tidy having each game and playthrough on their own page.

However, I can't seem to find a way to add a new post to an existing page...Everything just goes to the main page.

Is there a way to do it? Or is there another way I can easily organize my blog to make things easy for my readers to find?

Thanks for any replies.

(My blog isn't public yet, FYI. I want to get all the kinks worked out before I open it up)

Categories and Pages and Posts are all different.

Pages are static and are for content that rarely changes. They sit outside of the blog structure and you cannot post to multiple pages in any blog. There is only one main page for posts in a blog and all posts will display on the main blog page. There is no way to exclude posts from the main posts (blog) page.
http://en.support.wordpress.com/pages/
http://en.support.wordpress.com/posts/
http://en.support.wordpress.com/post-vs-page/

The front page of the blog by default will display your posts (not pages) in reverse chronological order, with the most recently published post on top. If you do not want all the posts to show on the front page, then you can create a static front page “Welcome” for your site and a “Blog” page for posts.
Choice 1 static front page
Choice 2 running page for all posts on front page
Which do you choose? It’s one or the other.
If you choose a static front page then you have to create two pages as I said above. After you do that you go to > Settings > Reading and make the designation change and click “save changes”.
http://en.support.wordpress.com/pages/front-page/

Though there is only one dynamic page in a blog for posts and we cannot post to more than that one page, we can create the appearance that we have posted to more than one page. We organize posts by assigning categories to them. You can either put the categories widget into the sidebar, or you can create a custom menu and add the categories pages that are autmatically generated by the software into the custom menu.

http://en.support.wordpress.com/posts/categories/
http://en.support.wordpress.com/widgets/categories-widget/

http://en.support.wordpress.com/menus/
http://en.support.wordpress.com/menus/#adding-category-pages-to-your-menu

A custom menu allows you to display Categories with drop-downs to sub-categories in tabs along the horizontal navigation where normally only Pages tabs are displayed. If you wish you can also include Pages with drop-downs to sub-pages and/or Tags pages and/or Custom Links in your custom menu as well. You are in charge of what appears in a custom menu. You choose the order in which to display any and/or all the foregoing in your custom menu. You choose which to display and which to hide.

Here’s a link to a custom menu walkthrough > http://onecoolsitebloggingtips.com/2011/08/11/wordpress-com-custom-menu-walk-through/

There are many common errors, misunderstanding and misconceptions when creating custom menus and you can read about them here > http://wpbtips.wordpress.com/2011/12/19/custom-menus/

So, here's the idea:

I'm in the process of creating my very first website, and it is going to be one where we will have multiple different authors, writing articles and submitting videos (hosted on YouTube). We have 3 or 4 writers who are "set in stone", but we will also accept articles from anyone in our local community.

My goal would be to have a page called "writers" where you have a picture and short bio of each contributor, and if you click on their picture it takes you to their recently written articles. Also, each article submitted would have their picture and name, so I can link to their previous articles.

I'm just trying to figure out how to organize it all on the site. Because this is my first time, I'm feeling pretty overwhelmed. Should I give each writer their own blog? Should I have a blog for articles, and another for youtube videos? Should I have just a single blog, and edit the title of each one to correspond to the author? How would you do this?

Thanks for any/all advice!

The Recent Posts widget displays them in chronological order. The Category widget lists them in alphabetical order of categories. Why don't you just do a text widget, a blank widget, and put them in whatever order you like? The easiest way to write a text widget (which has to be input as code) is to write a Draft Post containing everything you want and format it using the visual editor and then when it is just how you want, click to the HTML editor and copy all the code. Paste that code in your text widget, add a title, and put it in the sidebar.
