And when the new images are resized to 625 width they fill only about 3/4 width of the page?

I wouldn't mind a 625 width if it filled the full width of the page.

The main column width is 625 except in the full-width layout where it’s 960

Assuming there will need to be some space on either size of the image I suggest you size it to fit the space you intend it to display in.

I have previously been inserting large images. there is currently one inserted at 1226 x 1465 which I did some time ago.

Now no matter the image size it is automatically reduced to a maximum of 625 x 724 when inserted.

The main column width is 625 except in the full-width layout where it’s 960; sidebar width is 250.
Featured image width is 624 (height is flexible)—these images are displayed on displayed on “standard” posts; posts without a specific format such as image, aside, link, or quote.
The suggested header image dimensions are 960 by 250 (width, height). However, both are flexible so you can upload a smaller cropped image if you wish. The width is limited to 2000.

Post thumbnails are 470 pixels wide, unless you make the post Sticky to show off in the featured slider, in which case they’re 750 pixels wide. Keep in mind: if you mark a post as Sticky but the featured image is less than 750 pixels wide, then it won’t display in the slider and will still disappear from the river of posts.

If you failed to upload and set a featured image in each post and until you do upload one into each one the gray box will be there.

Please be aware that you cannot crop the sticky post thumbnails.

That's because you've been uploading huge image files (text is unlimited). I checked a couple of your images and they are 3648x2736 pixels, resolution 180 (obviously files straight out of your digital camera). There's no point doing that: browsers display images at a resolution of 72, and most users' screens are narrower than 1200px.

One way to solve the problem: you can start using an image editing application to downsize copies of the old images, then edit the old posts, replace the old images with the downsized ones, then go to Media > Library and delete the old images.
Other way to solve the problem: sign up for a new blog, upload images to that blog, insert them to your current blog via URL.

Thank you for the suggestions, I never thought of those issues. I thought we were downsizing the photos enough but I guess not. I will decrease the # of posts per page as you suggest and, in the future, will decrease the size & resolution of my photos. Thanks for the help!

Your last post alone has 38 images, and all of them are huge files straight out of your digital camera (the ones I checked are 350dpi, 4.2MB each): if you have a slow connection, the browser may time out before loading all the images.
You should:
a) Upload and insert images after you downsize them to 72dpi (that's what browsers display) and to 580px wide (that's the maximum the theme you're using can display); anything above this means an unnecessary increase of loading time and a waste of storage space.
b) Decrease the number of posts per page in Settings > Reading, and/or use the more tag to truncate the posts:

I just used a different computer to view my blog and all of the images seemed to display just fine... To answer your questions, yes, the images are found in my media library. They were uploaded to wordpress serves from my computer.

I think the viewing problem is with the computer and not my blog. Thank you for the help!
