2) That's the "Primary" sidebar of the theme. Appearance > Widgets: add the widgets you prefer to Primary, and the default ones will go.

Post thumbnails are 470 pixels wide, unless you make the post Sticky to show off in the featured slider, in which case they’re 750 pixels wide. Keep in mind: if you mark a post as Sticky but the featured image is less than 750 pixels wide, then it won’t display in the slider and will still disappear from the river of posts.

If you failed to upload and set a featured image in each post and until you do upload one into each one the gray box will be there.

Please be aware that you cannot crop the sticky post thumbnails.

- First, I'd like to have a background colour at left and right and another (or just white) in the center, like with other themes. Is that possible? Do I need to change the CSS or is it simpler?

It looked like you had some empty paragraphs in your post text, and that was causing the extra space. I fixed it for you by clicking on the "Text" tab in the Edit Post screen, and then clicking "Update".

I'm definitely not a WordPress pro and lately have been having issues. Whenever I insert an image into a blog post it screws up the spacing and leaves huge chunks of unwanted space below.

You will see what I mean on the link below, as there is a giant space under the photo

one more query please as i have no idea on CSS. Do you know how to limit the spaces between the widgets on the sidebars?

I would like to limit the space between the footer area and the main body of the webpage.

Part of the space comes from the widget area just below the main body, which you can adjust with this CSS:

#supplementary {
	padding-top: 0;
}

And the rest of the space is coming from various content elements in the left sidebar, right sidebar, and content area. You can get rid of most of the extra space by setting the margin to zero for several areas:

#secondary .widget:last-child,
#tertiary .widget:last-child,
#image-8 img,
.widget_facebook_likebox iframe,
.page-template-showcase-php #content {
	margin-bottom: 0;
}

To adjust this, you should experiment by either changing the "0" to another value or removing some of the selectors from the list until the spacing looks good to you.
