Here are some themes that have a featured post slider that automatically advances: Debut, Currents, On Demand, Modularity Lite, Sight. Note that last two are free themes.

I cannot figure out how to set up a post slider in Delicacy. I am still working on setting everything up before I truly start posting etc, but I have done a couple of test sticky posts to help create the slider.

From what I am reading, it sounds like when editing a page you can do something with the post slider template? under page attributes, it says there should be a template drop down, but this is not showing up for me. I am not positive this is the solution for the post slider though. Please advise. Thank you!

In Oxygen you can either have a Home page that displays your posts or a static front page ie. a Showcase template. http://en.support.wordpress.com/pages/front-page/#setting-up-a-static-front-page

Showcase page template
When you first activate Oxygen, you’ll see your posts in a traditional blog format but if you’d like to showcase your content in an online magazine-like fashion, then you can use the Showcase Page template. ...

Post thumbnails are 470 pixels wide, unless you make the post Sticky to show off in the featured slider, in which case they’re 750 pixels wide. Keep in mind: if you mark a post as Sticky but the featured image is less than 750 pixels wide, then it won’t display in the slider and will still disappear from the river of posts. Please be aware that you cannot crop the sticky post thumbnails.

Hi again,
There are many common errors, misunderstanding and misconceptions when creating custom menus and you can read about them here > http://wpbtips.wordpress.com/2011/12/19/custom-menus/

OK. I figured out the missing banner problem ... I needed a 'custom menu' to get my static pages to appear on the Home page.

That's no correct. Al, static pages automatically appear in the menu bar after publication. One does not need to create a custom menu if all they intend to have in it is tabs to static pages. If that's the case then don't create a custom menu and use the page order number to order your pages. http://en.support.wordpress.com/pages/#create-sub-pages-page-order If you want to include other items then you create a custom menu. http://en.support.wordpress.com/menus/

Troubleshooting – My menu isn’t appearing
Go to the custom menu page in the dashboard Appearance > Menus and in the “theme location” module at upper left select your custom menu from the pulldown and then click “save”.

Troubleshooting – My pages are in the wrong order
Check the sub-pages themselves to see if you have established a Parent page and child page “hierarchical structure” in the page attributes module. Remove if required. Also remove any “order” numbers you have assigned that may conflict with the order you are creating by dropping and dragging. Or simply change them so they are the same order as you establish in the menu. Establish consistency – problem solved.

OK. I figured out the missing banner problem ... I needed a 'custom menu' to get my static pages to appear on the Home page. That works, except that, even following the instructions to go to pages>pagename>right column and entering a number, the menu is in the wrong sequence on the front page. Also, the menu includes only the three static pages in back of the 'home' page, which is the blog, not the Home page itself, so if someone goes to one of the static pages, s/he is stuck. (1) How do I get the main page to show in the menu, and (2) how do I get the correct sequence of pages on the banner/menu. (3) is the main page 1 in the sequence or zero?

"I can't find the Page Attributes module"

To create a showcase template, you need to go to Pages > Add New. That's the dashboard screen that should be displaying the Page Attributes module. If it isn't, you click Screen Options http://en.support.wordpress.com/screen-options/ while on that screen (the page editor screen): and include all the Pages and Posts modules. http://en.support.wordpress.com/modules/#list-of-modules each dashboard screen has different screen options.

OK. I now know that 2011 ain't gonna give me a banner.

That's not correct. It has header images.

Twenty Eleven
Twenty Eleven has a special Showcase template which takes advantage of Featured Images when used on sticky posts:

An image with a minimum height of 300 pixels and a maximum width of 500 pixels will display next to the post.
An image that is at least 1000 x 288 pixels will be displayed instead of the post with a title over the image.
