Using different settings on the Appearance → Background page will help a little. Try setting the position to center, no repeat, and black as the background color.

If you want to add more space below the menu to give the text at the top of your background image a little room, add this to your Appearance → Custom Design → CSS editor:

#menu {
	margin-bottom: 100px;
}

If you want the header graphic to move together with the text, then I suggest removing the text from the background image and add that text using the Appearance → Header instead.

I'm WordPress illiterate. I don't have time to sift through youtube videos or read WordPress for Dummies. I'm not sure how involved what I'm asking really is, but I just want one thing: to structure the page around my darn background. Is this possible?

If you go to my site, http://shaunanicoleg.wordpress.com/ , you'll see the problem I'm talking about.

If nothing else, if I could just have the page regard the header area, I'd be happy.

I'd very much appreciate any help.

Thank you!:)

The Front Page has an introduction to the blog site and summaries of the latest posts (2-3)

You can set a static front page by following these directions > http://en.support.wordpress.com/pages/front-page/
In order to do that you will have to create two new pages. One for the static front page and another for the blog posts to appear on.
http://en.support.wordpress.com/pages/

If you want summaries of your recent posts to appear on the running page for posts which will be another one that you must create because you are choosing to have static front page, then you gave to edit each existing post and insert "the more tag" and click "upgrade". For all new posts you must insert "the more tag" prior to publishing them see here > http://en.support.wordpress.com/splitting-content/more-tag/

The right hand column is a sidebar and it's only use is for widgets. All widget descriptions and installation instructions are found on this support page > http://en.support.wordpress.com/topic/widgets-sidebars/

I have rarely used wordpress, but would like to start using it more. I need some help setting it up (using the same theme that I have now, which is Chaotic Soul) such that:
The Front Page has an introduction to the blog site and summaries of the latest posts (2-3);
The right pane menu with Pages, Archives and Categories stay the way they are;
For each Category, when clicked, a introduction (static) is followed by the posts in that category in reverse chronological order).

I appreciate the help.

Thanks,

shnikkidrum, I just saw what you did, and you are justifiably not very happy with it. But it's not what I suggested! Go to Manage Pages, remove the content of the page you named "home" and put this as its TITLE (minus the first and last spaces - you know, a normal link):

< a href="yourblog'sURL">home

Then the "home" will behave the way dxmaniacy2j told you the header does.
