Hi Brook. I don't think it is actually publically displayed. Here's what I have discovered so far. Once you put the password in WordPress remembers your ip address (I'm not a tech guy so that may not be exactly accurate) and it allows you to bypass entering the password the next time you log in from the same computer. To test this you can try looking at it from a different computer. I cleared the cookies on my browser and then it went to the link and it made me enter the password again. It's just that if you are using a public computer you have to clear your cookies when you log out. The problem I am having is that the password only works on the shortlink but not if someone just goes to my site, browses the pages and tries to access that post. It simply doesn't accept the password. It doesn't reject it...simply doesn't acknowledge that a password has been entered.

Hello ssunseth,
I read from your comment that "the password box comes up but it won't accept the password. It doesn't say it's wrong or anything. It just clears out the password box . ."
In my case, I am selecting "password protection" but when I preview the post, there is not even a box that appears into which to enter a password. This happened for the first time yesterday, 3/17/12 when I uploaded a video using videopress. The problem spread to a previous post I had made on 3/15/12 which originally did work to provide password protection. (A box for password did appear and accepted the password I entered on 3/15/12.) Today the box for the password is completely gone and the entire post is publicly displayed!

I created a post and password protected it. I created a category called 'private' and put it in there.
When I access that post through the shortlink to the specific post the password works perfectly.
However, if I try to go through like someone just browsing, go to my home page, select the 'private' list and click the post, the password box comes up but it won't accept the password. It doesn't say it's wrong or anything. It just clears out the password box and I can't get past it. Is there some way to remedy this?

Hi Everyone,

I'm currently converting a mockup into a wordpress website for a client. One of the pages in the navigation list is called "Students" and it needs to be password protected. Here are the steps I have taken.

Create a new page "Students"
In the "Publish" menu, Visibility > Password protected: "password"
[ Update ]
[ Preview page ]
What I see is a regular page, except the title of the page is changed to "Protected: Students"
The rest of the content is as you would expect for a non-password-protected page.
I am using WordPress 3.3.1. Is this one of those "known issues" that I don't know about? Thanks in advance.

The only other choice is to set the entire site to private and then you have to invite those that you want to view it to the site and they have to get a wordpress.com username and password if they do not have one. There is no way to set only certain parts of a site to private (requiring login).

@absurdoldbird - the reason we ask for the URL is that some days 30%++ people posting here are not hosted on WordPress.COM, Cuts down on the traffic and in many cases we need to look at the site - helps avoid confusion.
