I usually have the file referenced in a Post then email out the URL of the Post - then when I update or change the file people still have the Post (or Page) URL and not the file - when I have a change to a file many times I will change the name of the file to indicate a new revision and now you know the file has been updated.

Hello,

I uploaded a PDF file to my media files. I then sent out an email to about 20 people including the URL of the file.

I then edited the file, deleted the old version from Worpdress and uploaded it the new version.

The URL is different from the original upload. Is there anyway to edit it so as it matches the URL I sent out.

Hi. No, you cannot edit the URL of a media hosted by WordPress.com yourself.

I can think of two solutions:
- find an URL shortener that lets you edit the destination URL (so that while the short URL remains the same, you have the possibility of updating it)
- host your PDF file elsewhere.

I wish to provide a PDF file for users to download from my blog. This PDF will be updated by myself every few months. I would like to provide a canonical (or standard) URL for the PDF but instead WordPress provides me with a URL based on the date uploaded.

For instance, I might have a file "manuscript.pdf" that I would like people to access from:

 http://shlens.files.wordpress.com/manuscript.pdf

But instead WordPress provides:

 http://shlens.files.wordpress.com/05/01/manuscript.pdf

This is not great because I will be uploading a new version of "manuscript.pdf" periodically and the corresponding URL where people would download this file would change each time I upload it. I would prefer to point users to a single URL and never have to change it to tell users that a new version has been uploaded.

Is there any way for me to edit or customize the URL from which a media file is accessed? Any ideas or suggestions are appreciated.

Thanks, Timethief. I had seen that page before and know about the upgrade / non-ugrade files. Like I said above (written while you sent your message) the key was adding the ".pdf" extension to the file name.

But thanks for the usual friendly help. Hope all is well in beautiful BC. I'll assume you were not among the rioters in Vancouver when the Canucks lost. ;-)

In fact, I think I solved the problem. When I saved the document, I did not add the ".pdf" to the file name. Although the file opened fine on my computer, I could not upload it. I saw, however, that other PDF files could be uploaded via Flash. So I just added .pdf to the file name and was able to upload it.

Thank you for the instructions. I created a PDF on my Mac. I first created the document in Word for Mac and then saved it as a PDF. The encoding software is "Mac OS X 10.6.7 Quartz PDFContext".

There is no problem opening the document on my computer. However, when I tried to upload it to a test post, the process ran for a while and then I got the message "Sorry, this file type is not permitted for security reasons." I got this message using the Browser uploader. The Flash uploader will not let me click on the PDF file.

Any suggestions?

Thanks much in advance.
