You can use the text (code) editor to cut and paste the pictures into whatever order you'd like.

Code for a linked image looks like this:

<a href="http://bipstravelblog.files.wordpress.com/2013/05/an-butterfly.jpg"><img class="size-large wp-image-30" alt="I snapped this stunning little butterfly not far from Otosan and Okasan's home." src="http://bipstravelblog.files.wordpress.com/2013/05/an-butterfly.jpg?w=940&h=616" width="940" height="616" /></a>

Notice that it starts with <a CODE HERE etc.
and ends with "</a"

code for an image with a caption starts with this:
[caption CODE HERE etc.
and ends with this:
/caption]

You can use your browser's "find" function to search for "butterfly" which is in the title of one of your photos. Then it's only a matter of copying all the code between the tags and pasting it where you want it to go.

It is also possible to click and drag pictures in the visual editor, but it can become messy, especially when your photos have captions because in the visual editor you cannot see exactly where the cursor is.

Best to brave the code so everything stays neat and as you expect.

timethief,
Thank you so much for responding however I am not dealing with a post but with a page and still see no way to move the photos to different positions(I followed all of the links that you suggested, by the way). On my page I basically have a line of photos going down the center of the page. If one is in say, fourth position I might want to move it to second position and can see no way to do this. If I add another photo through "Add Media" the newest image goes right to the bottom of the page whether I want it there or not.

There has to be a way, rather than deleting all of the photos on a page and adding them from scratch one by one in exactly the order I want them to show up.

Also, a separate question...when I'm uploading normal (not screen-grabbed) images, I'm having trouble creating space around them. I click on the image, so that the two icons pop up including the photo image, and I click on it and then the image 'advanced options', and I add some digits in the options for 'horizontal', 'vertical' and 'border'. I click on 'update'. But the (single-digit) numbers I've put in to those boxes make no changes -- the text is still much too squished up to the photos. How do I make these changes stick?

I can't quite figure what I'm doing wrong here, or what it is that WordPress isn't liking...
I want to upload an image grab into a blog post. I used the free Mac app Grab, which I've never had problems with before, to size and select the screen grab I want. I saved three versions, as tiff, as jpg and as gif. I've tried adding each into a blog post / the gallery, but on each it won't upload and I get the error message, 'Sorry this file type is not permitted for security reasons'.

Any insights or suggestions?

Hi,

I think the Gallery would be the best way to go. Do you have the Custom Design upgrade?

There likely is a way to modify the spacing/border/etc of the gallery pictures to work toward your end.

In either case, the workflow would be to delete/draft the individual page and then modify the gallery to remove that particular image.

Perhaps not a slam dunk, but my best thought!

You do need the Custom Design upgrade in order to change the borders around gallery image in the Twenty Eleven theme on WordPress.com.

You can test it out before purchasing by going to Appearance → Themes → Customize → Custom Design and clicking the "Try Now" button.

Then go to the Appearance → Themes → Customize → CSS panel, and add the following example:

img[class*="align"],
img[class*="wp-image-"],
#content .gallery .gallery-icon img {
	border: none;
}
a:focus img[class*="align"],
a:hover img[class*="align"],
a:active img[class*="align"],
a:focus img[class*="wp-image-"],
a:hover img[class*="wp-image-"],
a:active img[class*="wp-image-"],
#content .gallery .gallery-icon a:focus img,
#content .gallery .gallery-icon a:hover img,
#content .gallery .gallery-icon a:active img {
	background: none;
}

That should remove all borders and hover background colors from linked images in the Twenty Eleven theme.

For this website I'm building for a local guitar shop, I want to have thumbnails of products within a certain subcategory which then lead to an individual product page.

If a product is sold, I can obviously delete the individual product page. What I'd like to have, is a system where I can also delete the thumbnail image and have any beneath it knock up a position to fill the space. This is an example of one of the pages in question:

http://carsandguitars.co.uk/electric/les-paul/

I've tried putting the photos into a gallery rather than a 2 column table, but the photos have a border that I can't remove, and I don't have enough caption space for all the information I'd like to have with each photo.

Any suggestions?

Anyway I can do this with a gallery? Every photo in the gallery has a frame that I want to get rid of. Is this something I'd have to do through the CSS? I don't currently have that customisation package and don't really want to have to get it if I don't have to!

Hi!

I'm pulling my hair out trying to create a gallery on wordpress's free, standard online version. Any help would be very welcome. I upload photos to the media library, can see them in the media library, but when I try to create a gallery there are no images shown to choose from. To the best of my knowledge I haven't installed any plugins or done anything else that should interfere. I tried changing the theme, switching from the standard one to another 'recommended' one.

Previously I got around this by uploading images and then pasting the image's library url into the post and displaying that way, but it doesn't look great and is tedious. For what it's worth, I've recently re-installed a different (better) version of windows and switched from chrome to ie10, and the only constant is that this feature didn't work properly before and still doesn't now.

I snipped a couple of screen shots if that helps.

Thanks!
