Akismet recently starting holding for moderation my pingbacks (internal links) to my own blog. It never used to. I read somewhere that this could be be because at some point I had inadvertently flagged one of my own comments as spam. I searched through the spam bin at that time and found one cryptic item with "Pied Type" in it and marked it "Not spam." However, my pingbacks are still being held for moderation.

I did another search of the spam bin today and found three items where spammers had included the words "Pied Type" in their spam message. As I understand it, leaving those items in the spam bin means Akismet will keep flagging my pingbacks for moderation. But if I mark them as "Not Spam," I'm giving a green light to those three spammers. I'm not sure what's going on here. Hope I've explained it clearly enough. If the devs can access it, the three items are here:

http://piedtype.wordpress.com/wp-admin/edit-comments.php?s=pied+type&comment_status=spam&pagegen_timestamp=2013-05-18+19%3A42%3A59&_total=16&_per_page=50&_page=1&_ajax_fetch_list_nonce=e0865c6ecb&action=-1&comment_type&_destroy_nonce=61dbbdba82&paged=1&action2=-1

This might be an issue for Akismet but I can't figure out how to contact them directly to explain the problem.

The last few times one of my posts has included a link back to one of my earlier posts, the notification has been held for moderation by Akismet. This has never happened before and I can't figure out why it's happening now. I've recently changed my Comment settings to require a previously approved comment, but made no changes regarding pingbacks, notifications, etc. Surely Akismet understands my comments and pingbacks have been previously approved, since I reply to readers' comments.

Also, just now, a pingback notification from a good friend was held in Akismet. His comments have been approved for years.

Can someone explain to me what's happening and why?

This week I've begun receiving email notifications when I link back to some of my own posts. That's as intended; I want notifications of trackbacks and pingbacks. However, suddenly Akismet is holding these notifications -- my links within my own blog -- for moderation when it never has before. Does Akismet not recognize me as a legitimate WordPress user and as the owner of the blog? I'm baffled and concerned that Akismet apparently now thinks I'm a potential spammer. (Only my trackbacks are getting held; my comments are not.)

I've recently tightened the requirements for commenting on my blog, but I don't see that any of the changes would cause Akismet to hold my trackbacks for moderation.

Macmanx, thanks for your input. If you've visited my jmnartsy blog, you will notice that there are no replies to any comments; this is the way I prefer it. I reply to comments via my hotmail email account directly to each commenter's email address; that is what I was referring to. In other words, a hack!

From where I'm sitting, someone who knows what they're doing has done this as my hotmail account is fine (it too is an HTTPS connection). However, this did prompt my memory as I had noticed, just on that blog, recently one or two spam comments that were using text directly from my Gravatar profile. I had dismissed this and had deleted those spam comments, but since then have updated the profile as I had forgotten that I'd placed my hotmail email address there as a public email. I have now removed that address and also added another verified services link (my Google+ profile) and refreshed a few other elements therein. I trust this will solve the problem and thank the engineer who provided this very important prompt -- never give out any personal details online, ever!
