phoster on "New Blog Platform Feature"

Greetings. I have a new feature idea for blogging platforms. The idea is for bloggers to be able to indicate, per article, organizations' websites and web services to ping with article events, in addition to pinging blog search engines with each articles' events. As envisioned, the feature would be configurable on blogging platforms and then for each blog article.

Bloggers could indicate organizations, on a configuration page, by means of web service URL's. A web service function response could include organizational metadata for blogging platforms' user interfaces. Then, per article, bloggers could indicate which organizations that each blog article is pertinent to. Organizations could then receive pings for article events, from numerous bloggers, and link to or present the blog articles from numerous bloggers on their websites.

A use case is consumer advocacy. Consumer advocacy groups, e.g. the Better Business Bureau, can each independently spider and index blog articles and tweets, where blog articles and tweets can have keywords or folksonomic tags, e.g. "bbb" or "#bbb", and can each utilize that data and make that data available on their websites. With the described feature of indicating organizations to ping, per article, consumers', parents', teachers', and scholars' commentary, feedback, and opinion, about digital textbooks and curriculum, for example, could be specifically routed, as indicated by each blogger, empowering bloggers and adding value to numerous organizations' websites including those of consumer advocacy groups, teachers' and education-related organizations.

In addition to the use of hyperlinks for indicating discussed items, for example opening digital textbooks to specific pages and object configurations (http://idpf.org/epub/linking/cfi/epub-cfi.html, http://www.w3.org/TR/media-frags/), some bloggers might want to also utilize hypertext quotes or multimedia clips in their blog articles during fair use scenarios.

The new blogging platform feature of pinging one or more organizations as indicated per article could additionally benefit scholarly and scientific communication. Scholars and scientists with blogs could utilize the new feature to indicate which scholarly and scientific organizations to ping for specific blog articles. The blog articles of many scholars and scientists could then be linked to or appear on a number of scholarly and scientific organizations' websites for Web users to discover, read, and interact with.

Kind regards,

Adam Sobieski

@carina31
There are over 150 themes you can examine and demo in the Themes Showcase.

You cannot build or use your own custom theme built from scratch at WordPress.com. The only themes we can use are those found here > Appearance > Themes
This is a multiuser blogging platform. All blogs wearing the same theme are using the same underlying template and we cannot access the underlying files and edit templates or themes. http://en.support.wordpress.com/themes/editing-themes/

There are two free themes, Sandbox and Toolbox designed to allow maximum flexibility for CSS editing and creating new “skins”. Toolbox is more modern and includes a lot of support for CSS3 and HTML5, so it is really only limited by your skills and knowledge.

As you have CSS editing experience the upgrade will allow you to stylize the appearance of themes you find here > Appearance > Themes, but will not allow you to change the functionality, by editing the underlying template. It does not allow you to remove footer links to the theme designer or to WordPress.com. Also note that CSS is theme specific, so you cannot use the CSS stylesheets from other themes with the themes at WordPress.COM. http://en.support.wordpress.com/custom-design/custom-css/

I agree with rich01, there might be quite a number of free themes for wordpress.com users to choose but there are just a few that really look nice to me.

I mean, guys, you guys gave us a dashboard system and blogging tools that surpass any other blogging site out there imo, and I appreciate that. The only thing missing here is the "look". (btw, if we have the function to add buddy then it would be nice) That's why wordpress.com is still a bit underrated.

I feel that we need a theme design contest for wordpress.com as I believe that there're a lot of talented designers among us.

Themes offered here have to first be sanitized for security issues and then modified to work with the multi-user version of wordpress which is used here, and then they have to be tested to make sure they work in all browsers and if problems are found, then another round of modifications and testing has to take place. And so on till there are, at the very least, no major issues.

To tellyworth:
The official theme directory is only available to wordpress.org users. Would it be possible to let wordpress.com users use those themes as easily as clicking and activating it, or what I mentioned above, a theme sharing platform for all. Just a suggestion.

If this sort of site is possible and going to be made, this can be a good structure, I guess?

User creates theme > Uploads into the system > Moderators (Volunteers/Staff) check for errors/malware/viruses/other crap > when there's no such thing, its approved, or not, reject > theme appears in platform for all to download/apply into blog immediately ('Activate')

There are many WordPress theme download sites around.

Unfortunately a bunch of people like to hide malicious code in themes. That's why the official theme directory has an approval process, and why we recommend against downloading themes from untrusted sources. Some of the theme download sites are run by the bad guys.

One of the drawbacks I feel in WordPress (Free Edition) is in the limited number of themes, and that usually drives some people away.

Why not consider having a theme sharing platform for WP Users? The main idea is: People can just browse through user-uploaded content (which, maybe, has to go through some sort of WordPress QC) and then apply it for use in blogs everywhere in WP (.com/.org applicable)

To detractors: I know there's one right here at http://wordpress.org/extend/themes/, but it only allows users to download approved WP themes. But the main difference in my idea is a platform for people to get more themes, that people who don't pay can use.
