Hi

I've got a problem in that the preformatted text is too wide (also, a horizontal scrollbar is being rendered at the foot of the content, but not at the top, so there's no immediate feedback that there's potentially a problem; it's only when you get to the end that you see the scrollbar and think 'oh, hey, that's why the text on the right-hand side is being truncated!).

I've checked the help, can't see anything relevant. I see three other threads in the forum voicing similar concerns, but they're all closed.

Problem is demonstrated at this page (using FireFox 10.02.2):

http://pendantry.wordpress.com/2011/06/19/o-o/

Any assistance would be cool. I really don't want to have to reformat the content, if I can avoid that.

Thanks for your reply timethief.

Yes, that link helped me for the most important problem i had. But for the vertical scroll bar, i havent found a property for that, the mos similar is:

collapse (true/false) — If true, the code box will be collapsed when the page loads, requiring the visitor to click to expand it. Good for large code posts. Defaults to false.

But is not what i want.

Ok, i found a solution for one of mi problems, so i will response mi self:

To have a horizontal scroll bar in long source code blocks, you nedd the property wraplines="false", for example:

[sourcecode language="javascript" wraplines="false"]
...
[/sourcecode]

But what about the vertical scroll bar?, the most similar thing i found is a collapse="true" property, but is not exactly what i want.

When using [sourcecode language="somelang"] ... [/sourcecode] i want the large strings to get preserved. I haven't the CSS upgrade, so i am using pre tags around this codes to have the horizontal scroll bar. The problem is that it works fine for a moment, but when i go to use the VISUAL Editor the pre tags gets removed automatically, i cant work like this. So i want to know if there is another or a correct way to do what i want. Also i want to know if i can have a VERTICAL scroll bar in a sourcecode snippet that is to big to be displayed all, i mean a limited size sourcecode block with horizontal & vertical scrolls.

Thanks, and sorry mi english"

First off, for the web, it is best to use either percentages or em units for font sizes so that they maintain their size relationship to all other items in the page regardless of monitor resolution etc.

I would suggest the following rather than your span stuff:

<span style="font-family:consolas; font-size:1.1em;">

The em units can even be set with two decimals such as .96 or 1.01 or 1.25.

Also note that I've checked my Mac and my PC and neither of them have the consolas font as part of the standard install, which means that my browsers are likely to substitute either times or courier for them. Never use a font that is not part of a standard OS installation or you are putting yourself at the mercy of whatever the visitor's particular browser decides to substitute.

The font browsers assign to monospaced text is Courier typically. Just use a span tag to declare that font, or perhaps wrap all the text in a div which declares courier as the font.

I really like the look of the font from the preformatted
<pre>
tag. However, it's a hassle to actually use the
<pre>
tag in my posts because it doesn't automatically break lines, and I have to manually insert break lines to format my posts.
Pasting
<pre>
text onto a Microsoft Word document, I have 9-point Consolas font, formatted to HTML Preformatting. To try to mimic this, I add the tag
<span style="font: 10pt consolas;">
. However, 10pt is too small, and 11pt is too big (I can't make it fall in between). The same problem goes when replacing 10pt and 11pt with 95% and 100%, respectively.
On top of that, the span tag seems to be missing something, because while the font is correct, the formatting just looks different. When I pasted my new text to the Word document, I have formatting set to apple-style-span, as well as a larger font than I would like.
Is there any way for me to perfectly mimic the font style, formatting, and size of
<pre>
without having to manually enter line breaks?

Ok - so this may be mentioned earlier but i still felt like sharing it out loud here
1 - many a times you wish that the texts or images etc - that you post in sidebars , mainly in text widget - should align at the center of sidebar - to do so you can use the div tag before your code -

<div align="center"> your text etc  </div>

You can also replace center by - right !
2 - You may have noticed that many times - if you type too many spaces/linebreaks together, wordpress skips them to a single space/linebreak. To preserve the format of your text as such you can use the pre tag , Text in a pre element is displayed in a fixed-width font, and it preserves both spaces and line breaks -

<pre>  wow                  this is

so
cool
</pre>

hope it helps anyone, good day !

I read the short thread http://en.forums.wordpress.com/topic.php?id=25617&replies=4#post-184841
unfortunately it's closed though I'm not sure the issue is resolved.

I use http://faq.wordpress.com/2007/09/03/how-do-i-post-source-code/ when I post HTML or CSS snippets and I use the the code or the pre element to display Linux commands;

However depending on the size of fonts chosen by Firefox users for instance (sorry I have no experience of IE), long commands aren't fully displayed. Using the pre element you can start a new line, and thus cut your command in two lines but then you have to mention that the comand is just one line, which may be puzzling for newbies or uneasy for quick copy-paste to the terminal.

One problem withe the "how-do-i-post-source-code" is that it doesn't validate because according to W"C, WP short cut produces HTML code while the DOC Type is XHTML.

Another problem is what code is a Linux command:it isn't HTML, CSS, etc. perhaps it doesn't matter, if the code name is just a CSS element, not a semantic thing.

Sorry to sound very tedious and finicky but WP is great and small improvement in its XHTML can't do much harm.
