Online stores aren't currently possible here at WordPress.com as our free hosted blogs cannot be equipped for ecommerce transactions at this time.

Please see the support documentation I link to below. All domain mapping ugrades are for one years and fro one blog only:
domain mapping
Register a new domain through WordPress.com

Before Upgrading – Important Notes
WordPress.com currently only supports registering domains with the extensions .com, .org or .net. You can still map domains with other extensions to your blog – you just have to register them with another registrar and then map them to your blog. The same goes if you already have a domain registered. Registering a domain through WordPress.com is much easier, but it’s not required.

Also, please note that WordPress.com automatically removes the “www” from all URLs.

You weren't really wrong, they've just recently changed the program and pricing structure very recently and I was surprised when I looked at the VIP page and saw the new pricing. It used to be a $500-$600 set up fee and the $500-$600 per month as you state. Of course for someone like CNN or Time, that $2500 per month is pocket change compared to what it would cost them to host and maintain it themselves. Definitely not for the normal or casual blogger that gets 100 hits per day - or even 10,000.

If you want to post ads, you will have to self-host a blog on a third-party hosting service such as godaddy or dreamhost, etc. As auxclass says, the only way to place ads here is with the VIP program, and few people would ever come close to qualifying for it, much less be able to afford it. It is designed for very high volume sites. This from the VIP page.

Because of the nature of this program it is not open to the public — it’s intended for high-profile publishers and startups that we have a good deal of confidence in. You might be a good candidate for VIP hosting if, for example, you get more than 1 million page views a month on your blog.

Pricing is based on a flat rate starting at $2500/month for up to 5 blogs and then $500/month per additional blog (with a one-time setup fee of $1,500 per blog) — but is flexible depending on your circumstances and number of blogs. We also require that you signup your developer(s) to our VIP Support program.

This is where you need to be looking and reading to see what is involved in self-hosting your own wordpress site: http://wordpress.ORG/support/ .
